The pair met in July 2013, when Amal visited George's home with one of his friends. Conveniently, Clooney's parents also happened to be in town visiting that fateful night, which meant the also got to meet the actor's future wife.

"We met in Lake Como. She was a friend of a friend who came to visit and then I chased her for many months, calling and writing, those kinds of things," Clooney told Popsugar

The two had an immediate connection, with his agent even saying "‘I met this woman who is coming to your house, who you’re going to marry," Clooney told David Letterman.

The pair then began sending pictures to each other for a few weeks. Eventually, they made the decision to see where their relationship could lead. According to George, everything that happened was completely natural. As the couple got to know one another better, they both knew their relationship was so much more than just friendship. Eventually, George and Amal went on their first date.

The Significance of the First Date

In October of 2013, George and Amal went on their very first date. At the time, Amal was living in London. George thought Abbey Road Studios was the perfect location to take Amal on a date. At the time, Clooney was filming the movie The Monuments Men, so Amal agreed to meet him at the studio.

"That was a good first date," the actor told Hollywood Reporter. "And pretty quickly, things escalated once I was in London."

According to Clooney, Amal's parents were wary of the actor's intentions.

"She'd had a conversation with her parents, who were like, 'What are George's intentions?' And she was saying, 'Take it easy. We've been going out for six months.'"

On April 28th of 2014, George invited Amal to his home. In addition to a homecooked meal, he had a lighter box. This is important because this is where George placed the engagement ring for his intended bride. The seven-carat ring was nothing less than exquisite. He set the table with candles. Then he asked Amal to light all of the candles using the lighter in the box.

George said he did everything he believed was expected of a man proposing to the woman he loved. He started by getting down in the classic pose of one knee. The song he was waiting for is called Why Shouldn't I? He thought the song was perfect for the occasion because it is all about taking a chance on love and romance. Finally, the song started to play. George said she was stunned when she saw the ring.

Amal's eyes were frozen on the ring. She was unable to tear her eyes away from the sight. George spent twenty minutes on one knee while Amal stared at what she had discovered inside of the box. He waited patiently for her to recover from the surprise. More than anything, he wanted to hear her say yes. Of course, Amal did say yes. This was the beginning of their engagement.

The engagement between George and Amal was short. In September of 2014, the couple was married in a beautiful ceremony. He said they had decided not to reveal their plans to anyone. Despite their best intentions, the news eventually became public.

"We didn't tell anybody else that we were going to do it but eventually somebody figured it out," Clooney told the Hollywood Reporter. "Oh, my God! Once people got wind of it, it became an event."

The couples friends and family were all around them during the private ceremony. They were married in Venice, Italy at the Aman Canal Grande.
