Stepping onto the music scene in 2019, Lil Nas X has shaken the pop music scene forever. Making his record-breaking hit “Old Town Road,” the now megastar is internationally known. Lil Nas X’s real name is Montero Lamar Hill and he was born in Lithia Springs, Georgia. He was born in April 1999.
Hill didn’t get his stardom overnight. He originally started using his creativity on the internet. He started by creating memes for platforms like Twitter. Eventually, he started to produce and host comedy videos on Facebook and Vine. He started to gain momentum on Twitter in 2017 making him into an internet personality. It wasn’t long until Hill would trade the internet personality title in for a pop star on the rise.
In December of 2018, he released the country rap song “Old Town Road,” after working extremely hard to bring the song to life. Hill would record on $20 dollar Tuesdays at a music studio in Atlanta to make his dreams come true. Self-promoting the song, “Old Town Road” picked up traction on the rising social media platform TikTok. In early 2019 “Old Town Road” would finally get the credit it deserves by becoming mainstream. The song would go on to hit the Billboard Hot 100 at number 83 before eventually climbing to the number one spot.
Breaking into the entertainment and music industry didn’t come easy but Hill managed to pass the test with flying colors. He would receive a huge break to stardom making another debut in 2019 in a Super Bowl commercial that is still an internet sensation years later.

There is nothing better than when generations come together to make magic. Whether it be remade movies or remixed songs people love a new take on a classic favorite. That is exactly what happened when the world heard and saw a Dorito’s commercial for the Super Bowl. The advertisement took the world by storm seeing a country music legend and a new rising pop star combine visions.
When Hill dropped the hit single “Old Town Road,” the world went a specific type of wild— country-western wild. The hit song went international and ended up breaking records as it sat on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Little did the world know that “Old Town Road” would be partnering with iconic names and brands to bring the sports world a one-of-a-kind showdown during the Super Bowl.
Working with America’s ultimate favorite chip brand Doritos as well as landing one of the country’s favorite countrymen, Sam Elliot, Hill struck gold with the record-breaking single. The one-minute commercial quickly became a fan and internet favorite after the release brought young and older generations together.
Not only were fans in love but they were also surprised when another country star made his way into the picture. With Billy Ray Cyrus singing part of the song “Old Town Road” it was only natural to see him in the video too. It’s safe to say that the small country meets Hollywood production may have made more of an impact than the sports game going on.

The Dorito chip commercial started with Hill riding down a back and dusty road riding past a sign that read “Cool Ranch.” Get it? Hill rode until he ran into Sam Elliott.
In the clip, Elliot walks into a saloon and stars quoting the lyrics from the song "Old Town Road." His famous southern draw works perfectly with the lines from the song as he acts them out. Then a beat can be heard from outside before Elliot sets down his drink and exits the saloon.
A second preview of the commercial released by Doritos shows Elliot and Hill facing off in a dance duel. “Make your move, cowboy," Elliot says before Hill breaks out into dancing. Elliot's famous mustache also breaks out a move as it wiggles across his face.
The dance number goes on and on before Elliot gives in to Hill's dance moves.
At the end of the clip, Hill rides off on his horse as he says, "Who got next?" The video cuts to Cyrus sitting on a rocking chair with a guitar saying, “I ain’t dancin’!” Cyrus was featured on the "Old Town Road" song as well.
Having millions of views on the internet, fans still talk about the iconic commercial.
One Youtube user wrote, “I think Sam won the minute his mustache wiggled that’s it game over lil Nas x.” Others gushed over the production and said, “This was a good super bowl commercial with old town road and cool thing with chips.” This commercial was certainly a big hit when it aired.
