Koko The Gorilla Left A Bold Message For Humankind Before She Passed Away

Koko recently departed this world at the age of 46. She lived almost her entire life with humans, who taught her basic American Sign Language and recorded her thoughts for the world. She has an important final message for you.

Kok recorded a message for the UN Climate Change Conference. She wants humanity to know that nature is tired of being exploited. Koko signed “Fix Earth. Help Earth,” along with “Nature see you.”

Koko grew up at the San Diego Zoo but spent most of her life with her caretaker, Francine Patterson, at a preserve in the Santa Cruz Mountains. She can understand over 1,000 words of sign language and 2,000 spoken English words. Patterson has shared Koko’s stories in books, films, and peer-reviewed articles. Some critics say Koko isn’t really communicating. What do you think?

Koko helped draw attention to the intellectual abilities of great apes. Although her syntax is limited, she can share what’s on her mind. She’s met a number of celebrities, including Robin Williams, Leonardo DiCaprio and Betty White. She all adopted a kitten, All Ball, and cared for him the way a human would care for a pet.

Alex the parrot is one famous example, although he never got to meet Koko, unfortunately. Dolphins, chimpanzees and even dogs and cats can also communicate with people.
