Kirk Cameron Married His Co-Star After He Found God — Calls Her His “Best Gift Of All”

While most people dream of making it to the top, there are others who want to live a simple life. For some, it can be struggling to give up worldly possessions, especially fame. But believe it or not, there are still people who would give it up in exchange for a deeper relationship with God and to spend more precious moments with their families – and Kirk Cameron is proof of that, becoming an evangelist himself.

Kirk got into acting at the age of 9. By the time he reached the age of 14, he had snagged the role that would change his life forever.

Kirk met Chelsea while working together on the hit comedy series ‘Growing Pains’ – taking their onscreen relationship into a real one and choosing to spend the rest of their lives together. Working in an industry often stereotyped for short-lived romances and breakups, Chelsea and Kirk proved that it’s not impossible to find ‘the right one’ in the showbiz industry.

On July 21, 1991, the two got married – and they have been inseparable since. They have been blessed with six children – four adopted children, Jack, Isabella, Anna, and Luke, and two biological children, Olivia and James. But for the couple, the word adopted doesn’t exist because they see them as their children.

“They’re just my kids. Literally, I forget who’s adopted and who’s not. It really doesn’t seem like that. They’re my kids, I’m their dad and Chelsea’s their mom. It’s just a great, wonderful way to not only have a family yourself but meet a real need in the lives of so many of these orphans,” Kirk said.

But it was through his faith that he lived a life full of meaning. He considered himself an atheist at one point in his life.

Time and again, Kirk is reminded that he was lost for a time and it was God who found him.

When Chelsea came into his life, his world changed. He simply knew it was a lifelong commitment the moment he decided to marry Chelsea – and he took it by heart.

“Marriage is a covenant relationship between me, my wife and Jesus,” Kirk said. “And there is no exiting out of that covenant relationship.”

Then again, it hasn’t always been all roses for them – they also encountered a few marital problems in between.

But Chelsea and Kirk have proven that working together made a difference in their relationship, further strengthening their foundation as a couple as it allows them to grow together not just as individuals but as parents to their kids.

“Some people tell us that it’s not healthy to be together so much. But working together has made the intimacy of our friendship much deeper. We know each other so well. We understand our strengths and weaknesses,” Chelsea said.

“Instead of taking our frustrations out on each other, we’ve learned how to best work through things. We don’t walk away from each other or run to separate workplaces. We face each other and work things out. Also, since we’re committed to raising our children as a team, working together strengthens our bond as parents and keeps us together as a family,” she added.

For Chelsea and Kirk – prayer is key. As they say, “the family that prays together, stays together” – and it couldn’t be any truer for them.

“One of the most effective and helpful things that we do as we work is pray together,” Kirk said.

In 2015, Kirk penned a heartwarming message about his marriage to his wife to mark their 24th anniversary at the time. As if his love for her couldn’t be more obvious with his commitment, he called his wife the “best gift of all.”

“I was only 20 years old when I married the love of my life... 24 years have passed from the day we took this picture. Tonight, we celebrated at home with our six children over one of our favorite dinners- turkey tacos! To me, still being together and in love is the best gift of all. God has been so kind and given me so much more than I deserve,” he said.

In 2008, Kirk worked with Erin Bethea for the film ‘Fireproof’ which required a kissing scene at the end of it. But Kirk refused to do it. Although some people might argue that it’s part of the job, Kirk believed he wouldn’t be staying true to his promise of commitment if he kissed his co-star.

“The reason this movie was important to me personally is because I love my wife dearly,” he told TODAY in an interview back in 2008.

For Kirk, it is important to live by his words, as he stated even back then. “We’ve been married for 17 years … and we have six children. So marriage is a very special and sacred thing to us. In a day and age where marriage is falling apart, we want to make movies and projects that really uphold and have a high view of that which is beautiful and wonderful in our culture,” Kirk remarked.
