On Apr. 9, 2005, King Charles III and Queen Camilla exchanged vows, and 20 years later, they celebrated their enduring love with three heartfelt new portraits. These images, captured ahead of their milestone anniversary, showed the royal couple looking serene and joyful. The photographs were taken in Rome, in the picturesque grounds of Villa Wollonsky, the official residence of the British Ambassador to Italy, Lord Llewellyn.
The royal couple was in Italy for a four-day state visit at the invitation of the British government. They stayed at the Quirinale, President Sergio Mattarella’s official residence, and commemorated their milestone anniversary with a glamorous black-tie state dinner on the evening of Apr. 9, 2025.
Twenty years ago, Charles, who was then known as the Prince of Wales, was in Rome attending the funeral of Pope John Paul II after postponing his wedding to Camilla Parker Bowles in honor of the late Pontiff. In 2025, Charles and Camilla paid a surprise visit to Pope Francis as he recuperated at the Vatican, which was held behind closed doors.
Throughout their visit, the royal couple met with President Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. King Charles also became the first British monarch to address Italy’s joint parliamentary session. The visit also included a trip to the Colosseum, where a special performance by the Welsh Guards and the Italian Granatieri di Sardegna bands took place, accompanied by a spectacular flypast by the RAF Red Arrows and Italy’s Frecce Tricolori.

For their special photoshoot, Queen Camilla wore a chic white and beige coat dress by Anna Valentine, accessorized with a delicate Lily of the Valley brooch. King Charles looked distinguished in a navy pinstripe suit, complementing his wife’s elegant look.
The photos were shared on the couple’s official Instagram page with the following caption:
“As we begin our first visit to Italy as King and Queen, we are so looking forward to celebrating our twentieth wedding anniversary in such a special place – and with such wonderful people! A presto, Roma e Ravenna! - Charles R & Camilla R.”
A sweet video highlighting some of their most tender moments together was also shared later by the same account.
During their visit to Ravenna, the King and Queen marked the 80th anniversary of the British and Canadian forces’ liberation of the city from Nazi occupation. They also took part in a culinary experience at a festival celebrating the Slow Food movement in Emilia Romagna, tasting local dishes with a British twist, such as parmesan and whisky pairings.
The King also met with farmers affected by floods that devastated the region in recent years, while the Queen visited representatives from a local domestic violence charity. The royal couple also paid tribute to Italy’s literary heritage by visiting Dante’s tomb, with the Queen making a solo trip to the Byron Museum. Ahead of their arrival, Lord Llewellyn remarked:
“Their Majesties will do something intangible but priceless. Their visit will strengthen the closeness between our nations in a way that only they can, creating memories that will last a generation.”
He continued:
“Their love for Italy and all things Italian – things Italians cherish, culture, food, heritage – resonates very, very deeply. The State Visit brings together, quite simply, the best of Italy and the best of Britain, the closest of friends, allies and partners.”
As King Charles and Queen Camilla celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary, their bond continues to inspire. Their milestone is a testament to their enduring love, shared commitment, and the deep connection they have cultivated.
