Kevin Costner is well-known for his hardcore dedication as an actor, producer, and writer. His unwavering commitment to every project he undertakes means he often goes to extreme lengths to ensure that every detail aligns with his vision.
This dedication has led him to focus all his energy behind the scenes of his endeavor “The Horizon: American Saga,” a Western film comprising four parts, the first of which was released in June 2024. But how far exactly did Costner go to manifest his creative ambitions?
Through this project, which he poured all his energy into since 2022, Costner aimed to capture a pivotal moment in American history.
“The Horizon” is set against the backdrop of the Civil War, delving into the westward expansion and conflicts between Native American tribes and settlers vying for land.
In June 2024, Costner made a personal announcement regarding his role in the hit series “Yellowstone.” He revealed that after dedicating a year and a half to “Horizon,” he wouldn’t return for season five of the show.
Speaking to his fans through Instagram, he expressed: “It was something that really changed me. I loved it. And I know you loved it,” adding, “I just wanted to let you know that I won’t be returning and I love the relationship we’ve been able to develop and I’ll see you at the movies.”
However, “Horizon” has not been without its struggles. Despite his past career successes, securing investors has been difficult. Costner admitted that others lacked confidence in the project, leading him to fund the production personally.
Reflecting on the film’s origins, he shared in May 2023: “I commissioned this story in 1988... I couldn’t get anybody to make it.”
Although he faced financial setbacks, Costner remained determined. He eventually revisited the idea, writing with a partner and developing it into a four-part saga.
Understanding the scale of the challenge, Costner made significant personal sacrifices and gambled with so many aspects of his life to ensure the project saw the light of day.
Despite the challenges of securing financial backing, Costner has gone to great lengths to get his vision, “Horizon: An American Saga,” into movie theaters, even risking his personal assets along the way.
When asked about betting on his project, he stated:
“At the end of the day, I’m a storyteller, and I went ahead and put my own money into it. I don’t know why, but I have not let go of this one.”
This marks the fourth time in his career that Costner has “pushed it into the middle of the table” with such high stakes.
The “Horizon” series, a four-part Western epic, cost Costner approximately $98 million for the first three installments, with the total investment expected to surpass $100 million.
He admitted in May 2024, during a press conference at Cannes, that he risked his personal wealth, including mortgaging his oceanfront property, which threw his accountant into a fit.
“I’ve acquired some things... I don’t need four homes. I’ll risk those homes to make my movies. ... I want to leave them to my children, but my children will have to live their own lives,” he said, acknowledging the sacrifice.
Costner revealed:
“I’ve mortgaged 10 acres on the water in Santa Barbara where I was going to build my last house. But I did it without a thought. It has thrown my accountant into a... conniption fit. But it’s my life.”
He explained that “Horizon” has become more than just a film; it was his obsession.
“I made it for people,” he emphasized, reflecting on the struggle to secure funding for this and past films like “Dances with Wolves” and “Open Range.”
Costner’s financial gamble faced a setback when the first film underperformed at the box office, grossing just over $11 million domestically. But his determination remains.
With the premiere of Chapter 2 in September 2024 and production already underway for Chapter 3, Costner hopes future installments will bring the financial success needed to justify his risk.
Meanwhile, Costner’s personal life has been turbulent. His divorce from designer Christine Baumgartner in May 2023, after 18 years of marriage, added stress to his already challenging year.
However, Costner denied that the movie productions had anything to do with the separation and deemed them “not related.”
Despite these struggles, including co-parenting their three children, Costner remains focused on his long-term goal: to finish “Horizon” and share his vision with the world. His dedication to the story is personal: the lead character’s name, Hayes, is also his son’s name!
