Chesney was appearing at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana in front of 50,000 of his biggest fans. Along with Chesney, other stars performing on stage included the Zac Brown Band, Miranda Lambert, Montgomery Gentry, and Sugarland.
In an emotional speech, Chesney told his adoring fans that although he was taking the break from touring, he did not plan on disappearing from the music scene completely. He then launched into the song “Better As A Memory." The emotion of the situation simply became too much for Chesney as he broke down on stage.
The song was a fan-favorite from the 2007 "Just Who I am: Poets & Pirates" album. "Better as a Memory" ended up becoming Chesney's fourteenth number one hit.
It was also the perfect song for Chesney to go out to.
