Kelly Clarkson Struggled To Explain The ‘Definition Of Love’ To Her Kids After Messy Divorce With Brandon Blackstock

Kelly Clarkson first became a household name in 2002 following her win on the hit competition series “American Idol.” Since then, the singer has sold millions of copies of her albums and toured across the world. Some of her most notable hits include “Since U Been Gone,” “My Life Would Suck Without You” and “Because Of You.” With an incredible vocal tone and range, Clarkson has easily become one of the best and most recognizable pop stars in the US.

With nearly two decades in the public eye, Clarkson’s personal life has been on full display. She famously wed Brandon Blackstock in 2013. Together they had two children, River, 9, and Remington, 7, as well as two older children from Blackstock’s previous marriage. In 2021, the two broke up and had a very public and controversial divorce marred with custody, property and alimony disagreements.

After a messy divorce with Blackstock, Clarkson has been enduring and braving the life of a solo parent to her two children, as well as the impacts of the divorce on herself. Clarkson was awarded primary custody of their kids, and in October 2021, she also won their $10.4 million Montana ranch, which was a big sticking point in the divorce proceedings.

Aside from those, Clarkson is also working toward explaining and making sure her kids understand the idea of what is happening in their family. At one point, Clarkson confessed that after the divorce, her kids even went on to question the “definition of love,” which the singer had the difficulty of answering.

Speaking to Podcrushed with Penn Badgley, Nava Kavelin and Sophie Ansari, Clarkson opened up about how her bitter divorce panned out and how it prompted important conversations in her home with her children.

“When you do go through a divorce, especially with young kids, the definition of love comes up quite a bit,” she admitted.

She confessed that at one point, she was asked by her children if she still loved Blackstock amid the divorce.

“I love that Daddy gave me you two,” Clarkson recalled telling them. “We just don’t like each other like we did. It’s just different now.”

However, it wasn’t the hardest thing that Clarkson was left to face. She also shared that she “can see it on their face,” asking if her love could change for them.

“It’s hard. and then it’s hard when they go, ‘Why don’t I have a grandpa from you? You told me love is different with a parent and a child than with a husband and a wife. But it’s not because your dad left you,” Clarkson went on to explain.

Unbeknownst to many, Clarkson also had a difficult relationship with her father. According to The Things, her father provided “such a toxic environment that kept inflicting pain her way.”

“I think, even if it’s not your father, whoever it is in your life, if someone presents such a cancerous environment and then just keeps hurting you, even if they are doing it inadvertently and they just don’t know better, you should just not have that person in your life. And it’s okay, it’s not a hateful situation. You go your own way,” she added.
