Kate Middleton Rushed To Pick Up Her Kids From School In Light Of Queen's Passing

It was a big year for Queen Elizabeth II, who in February celebrated 70 years as Queen of the United Kingdom and 15 Commonwealth realms. This is not only a milestone for her but for the entire world, as she was the first British ruling monarch to reach the seven-decade mark. In fact, she's already made history and is the second longest-serving monarch ever.

She's only bested by one other ruler, Louis XIV of France after she overtook two rulers — Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand and Johann II of Liechtenstein — in 2022. While Feb. 6, 1952, marks the day that Queen Elizabeth, then 26, became the monarch of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, it also has a sad meaning — it's the day that her father, King George VI, died. For anyone who's watched Netflix's royal drama series "The Crown" they'll be aware that Elizabeth was being primed for her future role as queen even while her father was still alive and he was king.

In fact, even in 1951, the year before her reign officially started, and two years before her coronation in 1953, she already stood in for her father on some occasions when he was ill. Her father ended up passing away on Feb. 6, 1952, and her coronation took place 16 months later. Becoming queen, Queen Elizabeth II defied many odds during her 70-year reign, which sadly came to an end when she passed away on Sept. 8, 2022. She passed away while at her home in Balmoral after Buckingham Palace had earlier announced that she was under medical attention. With reports of Meghan and Hary rushing to be by the queen's side, The Duchess of Cambridge also picked her children up from school to tend to their great-grandmother's side.

Her early life before she became the queen is just as fascinating as the long time she's held the throne, and in fact, she wasn't always destined to become the ruling monarch. The queen was born Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary on Apr. 21, 1926, and is the eldest daughter of King George VI and Elizabeth, Duchess of York. At birth, she was not first in the line of succession, but after her uncle abdicated the throne and her father became King, she became next in line.

As a little girl, the queen was affectionately addressed as "Lillibet" by her loved ones, and this nickname would later mean so much to the queen upon the passing of her beloved husband, Prince Philip. She went by several names when she became queen: Her Majesty, Elizabeth II, or simply the queen. But according to Town & Country, she also was called one other name, Gan-Gan, a name which only her multiple great-grandchildren are allowed to call her. queen Elizabeth was destined for great things from her birth, but royal life comes with many pressures, including marriage. However, the Queen's story was quite unique, which is what made her life so fascinating.

In a social media post on Twitter, the royal family disclosed a statement about Queen Elizabeth II's death. The post read, "The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family," King Charles III said. "We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world," he added.

She was seen leaving their Windsor home and arriving at Lambrook School. The children's first day of school was very exciting, according to The Mirror. They also report that The Duchess was not by her husband and family's side because she was waiting for the children. "The Duchess of Cambridge has remained in Windsor as Prince GeorgePrincess Charlotte, and Prince Louis are on their first full day at their new school," the statement read
