Hudson and McConaughey’s friendship goes way back to when they first appeared in the film “How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days” together. Released in 2003, the romantic comedy is now considered one of the genre’s classics from the 2000s and shows off Hudson and McConaughey’s comedic chops perfectly. The film follows the exploits of journalist Andie Anderson, played by Hudson, and McConaughey’s advertising executive Benjamin Barry, who become embroiled in two complex schemes aimed at heightening their careers. Anderson’s goal is to use Barry as an experiment of sorts for her next article about what not to do in a relationship, while Barry sets his sights on Anderson when he enters into a bet with his boss that he can make any woman fall in love with him. While the film was met with mixed success upon its release, it has since entered into the hallowed halls of cult rom-com classics in the years after.

The pair teamed up again for 2008’s “Fools Gold,” about a separated couple who rekindle their romance while searching for lost treasure together.

On Feb 6. 2023, the charming pair reunited on social media to discuss their onscreen chemistry, which they boiled down to matching acting styles.

"What tickles me doesn't bruise you; what tickles you doesn't bruise me," McConaughey said on the Instagram Live session. He added, "We were never afraid to push it to what might be considered too far."

Hudson added: "We are sensitive people, but we don’t take things personally. We’re tough-skinned. I think maybe it has something to do with our freedom. I feel like we’re both very free. We don’t constrict ourselves to an idea of what we’re ‘supposed’ to be doing.

Hudson said in the IG Live session that they were both able to play off each other instinctively. “There’s something spontaneous about the way we were able to work together. When you went in one direction, I went with you but then I would be like, ‘I’m going to throw him off a little bit. Let’s see what happens if I do a sharp right.’ (You’re) like, ‘OK, I’m coming sharp right!'” she said.

"We were constantly jousting," McConaughey remarked, to which Hudson responded, "We have a thing!"

Another way they matched was their need to stay respectful to their real-life partners. During the filming of “How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days,” McConaughey had been dating waitress Michelle Smith while Hudson was married to musician Chris Robinson. They said they never crossed the line during intimate scenes and always “kiss nicely.”

"My whole thing is like, we're always in weird environments (when we kiss in films). … There was only one time when we kissed that was like so nice and gentle, in the bathroom," Hudson recalled.

McConaughey added: "Yeah, everything else has not been climate-controlled. Everything else was like, 'Swim up to the top, the sharks almost ate you, you just fell from a plane from 300 feet, tread water and before you catch you breath, kiss.'"

Hudson elaborated: “When you’re kissing anyone in a movie, it’s professional. We’re actually trying to create something that evokes something in a certain way that might not exactly be the way you would necessarily do it in real life. … But, in respect to our now-partners, we do kiss nicely. It was always a very nice kiss.”

McConaughey chimed in with: "I would have to agree with you. Absolutely."
