On Sunday night, May 17, the winner of American Idol’s 18th season was announced and it turned out to be the talented Samantha Diaz who has been known as Just Sam throughout the show.

Even before she won this year’s title, Sam had become one of the most memorable contestants of the season after she revealed her background story in her emotional audition:

Since Sam was in middle school, she has been earning her living as a subway singer in New York City. The now 20-year-old is living with her grandmother who had adopted and raised her when Sam’s actual mother had abandoned her as and her sister as young girls.

Sam's grandmother has therefore always been her rock and means the world to her. As Sam stated in her audition: “I just want to give her back all that she’s given me.”

When Sam auditioned, she hoped that the show would be an opportunity to change her life—not knowing that she would end up winning the whole season and actually have the chance to improve the lives of her and her family.

For Sunday night’s finale, Sam delivered stunning performances of Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger” and Andre Day’s “Rise Up” as she was competing against her fellow finalists Dillon James, Jonny West, Francisco Martin, and Arthur Gunn to win the title.

When Sam was declared the winner of the season, she and her grandmother were more than excited about it. Sam expressed that she did not expect to win saying: “My dreams have come true!”

Congratulations Just Sam for winning the title of this year’s American Idol season! Did you expect her to win? Let us know in the comments and be sure to spread the good news to your friends and family!
