Julian Lennon Shares Photos Of Touching Moment With Former Beatle Paul McCartney

It was an unseasonably warm day in April of 1963 when Beatles musician John Lennon and his partner Cynthia introduced baby Julian Lennon into the world. Now in his 50s, Julian is an accomplished musician himself and has grown up to look just like his famous dad. However, despite their unmistakable resemblance, their relationship was far from rosy.

Though the family may have seemed picture-perfect on the outside, their relationships were far rockier. Speaking to The Telegraph, Julian said his father John may have preached love across the globe but rarely showed it to his own family.

"Dad was a hypocrite. He could talk about peace and love to the world but he could never show it to his wife and son," Julian expressed in a particularly bitter and notorious interview during the '80s.

In fact, John wasn't even present for his birth: Cynthia had to endure labor alone while the Beatle flew to the other side of the continent, as reported by Express. Some experts claim that this was the standard during the early '60s; fathers were rarely expected to be present. Still, the absence seemed to be more of a trend than a tradition in John's case.

Despite these challenges with his father, Julian has grown to gradually accept his family history and forgive any past pains. In 2022, he spoke to PEOPLE about reconciling with his father. He's even found a way to be on good terms with his "Uncle" Paul McCartney, as the two have been spotted together in the most unlikely of places.

Though Julian has expressed doubts about his father's love, John's second son held more favorable opinions of the man. Sean Lennon, John's son with his second wife Yoko Ono, felt secure and loved by both of his parents. "Sean was the product of love," John told Playboy magazine in 1980. As for Julian? The famous Beatle said in the same interview:

"I'm not going to lie to Julian. Ninety percent of the people on this planet, especially in the West, were born out of a bottle of whiskey on a Saturday night, and there was no intent to have children. So 90 percent of us — that includes everybody — were accidents. I don't know anybody who was a planned child. All of us were Saturday-night specials. Julian is in the majority, along with me and everybody else. Sean is a planned child, and therein lies the difference. I don't love Julian any less as a child. He's still my son, whether he came from a bottle of whiskey or because they didn't have pills in those days. He's here, he belongs to me and he always will."

As the years have flown by, Julian has made short statements about his complex and, at times, heart-wrenching relationship with his father. Still, Julian managed to also carve a life out for himself separate from the fame and pain of his past.

In fact, just like his father, Julian has been nurturing his artistic side, as music and visual art have appealed to him since he was young. Even after the death of his father, Julian's resulting art has been compared to the legendary singer and songwriter.

Julian also appears to be working to amend his soured relationships with Yoko and Sean. Fortunately, it seems Sean and Julian have begun a tentative friendship. It has become not uncommon to see the pair dotting press releases together and appearing publicly. In an interview with the BBC, Julian mentioned his half-brother and expressed how he thought Sean was a "smart kid" and a lovable brother.

As both brothers grow, they continue to make artistic strides that are independent of the legacy defined by their father. In 2022, Julian released an album, titled "Jude" — a nod to John's chart-topper "Hey Jude." The 1968 hit had been written to comfort young Julian as he witnessed his parents' souring marriage finally ending in divorce.

"It was very much reflective, looking in the mirror deeply and trying to find that place of peace," the singer told PEOPLE, as he described his record writing and reconciling process. He also said he had "resolved many issues way back when" that he had with his famous father.

Julian has even found a way to co-exist in a sense with the remaining Beatles, the members of whom he lovingly refers to as "uncle." In November 2022, the singer bumped into his father's old bandmate, McCartney, and of course, snapped a few pictures together. The two had connected in an airport lounge of all places and Julian described the run-in as "so, so lovely." It's heartwarming to see Julian able to have both his own career and the support of these legendary musicians, despite the past.
