In Providence, Rhode Island, a woman made her way to the stand for a parking violation in front of Judge Caprio. The defendant was accompanied by her two children that day, including her six-year-old daughter. He made her a deal that he'd let her off the ticket as long as she took her hungry kids out for breakfast.

A Parking Fine Grew Into Something Much Bigger

In Providence, Rhode Island, Judge Frank Caprio serves as the jurisdiction's chief municipal judge. One of the things that he has become known for over the years that he has served on the bench is the high level of kindness that he has shown so many people who have become part of the legal system.

While there are still many people who have had him making judgments on their cases who aren't happy with their outcomes, there are many who are grateful for the kindness that he has shown them. No matter what the person on the stand has been accused of in traffic court, he tries to show a certain level of understanding and he tries to give people second chances when he believes it is the right choice in the situation.

A Child's Opinion

During the hearing, the defendant explained to the judge that her cousin had been holding a party at her house and she had driven there to pick something up at 3 am. To avoid getting her car hit by a passing vehicle, she had parked on the sidewalk to avoid having her car hit. When the police went to the address, her car was given a ticket. She went on to gather $200 in fines from not paying the ticket on time.

After hearing the woman's version of events, Judge Caprio turned to her daughter after calling her onto the stand and stated, "Do you hear that? Now we’re going to make a decision.”She was told to choose the fairest option out of 4 for her mother's judgment.

These options were: 1. Her mother pays the original fine of $100 and $200 in fees 2. Her mother pays just the $100 fine 3. Her mother pays $50, half of the original fine 4. Her mother pays nothing.

After being given these choices, the little girl responded with, "I’m gonna charge her number 3. I’m gonna charge her $50." It was around 9:20 am and Judge Caprio asked the little girl what she ate for breakfast and she responded that she was "starving" as she had been in court since 8 am without eating. In response, he charged the mother with nothing on the condition that she take her children out for breakfast.

While a woman may have made a mistake by parking illegally, a Rhode Island judge was more than fair. He made her a deal that he'd let her off the ticket as long as she took her hungry kids out for breakfast, something she happily accepted.
