Johnny Depp Left Antique Store Staff ‘Starstruck’ After Arriving Via Helicopter For A Surprise Visit

Many celebrities avoid exposure in public and prefer to stay out of sight whenever possible. They are seen on screen or in performance venues regularly, but we rarely get a glimpse into their personal lives. Sometimes, however, celebrities do things outside their public entertainment career that show us how great they are as people.

Johnny Depp is a prime example of a celebrity who prefers to stay out of the spotlight in his day-to-day life. He has appeared in several of Tim Burton's films throughout his illustrious career, including "Edward Scissorhands," "Sleepy Hollow," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Alice in Wonderland." Depp is widely regarded as one of the world's most famous movie stars and was listed as the highest-paid actor by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2012. 

After a tumultuous last two years because of his contentious defamation trial against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, Depp has now reached a new point in his life. In the past year, he toured with the late Jeff Beck before the rocker passed away on Jan. 10, 2023. 

Now, Depp has kept a relatively low profile since embarking on his music career with Beck last 2022. Perhaps his most recent appearance was at the Hemswell Antique Centres when Depp surprised the store’s staff when he arrived via helicopter to check out some of their vintage items. 

Read on to learn more about Depp’s trip to the antique shop and how he surprised everyone with a rather noticeable entrance despite his usual attempts to stay hidden. 

Depp, an A-list celebrity who most definitely would attract crowds whenever he goes to public places, has liked to stay hidden in the past few years. In 2022, the actor took over the headlines because of his infamous defamation trial against his ex-wife Heard. Since then, he has been on the down low and avoided as much media attention as he possibly can. 

However, it has not stopped other people from gushing about the actor when they spotted him in public places. 

In October 2022, Depp’s neighbors in Owensboro, Kentucky, posted photos on social media which they took with him while he was visiting his old hometown. He simply requested his old neighbors to post the photos after he had already left. 

"Last night, my kids were hanging out down the street at a friends house, and Johnny Depp showed up!! He was kind enough to walk across the street and get a picture made with all the kids and neighbors. His dad and his aunt and uncle all have a house on our street, and he was here visiting. He was very kind but Job pointed out to me that he doesn’t look like the guy off Edward Scissorhands that we watched last week!” Abby Keelin shared on Facebook along with photos of the actor. 

It seems like Depp has a penchant for surprise visits. According to BBC, Depp arrived ​​at Hemswell Antiques Centre in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, in a helicopter on Mar. 4, 2023. The owner of the store, Rob Miller, was only told that a special guest would arrive at their store but kept quiet to his staff about who the secret guest was.

Speaking more to BBC, Miller detailed Depp’s visit to their store.  

“He just bought a lot of very quirky items. A desk chair, four guitars, paint sets, easels, a few pictures, posters, just a whole range of things for decorative items for his own personal property,” he recalled. 

Among the items that Depp picked up from the antique store were vintage vases and guitars. Miller also said that he overheard him talking about Beck to one of his colleagues at the store. 

After winning his defamation trial with Heard, Depp has moved on to greener pastures and has rekindled his passion for music. He and Beck even collaborated on an album, “18,” which was released in July 2022. However, Beck passed away in January 2023 because of bacterial meningitis. 

Miller described Depp’s visit to the store as “great” as the actor was his “normal self” and was “very relaxed” as he skimmed through the items. 

“He really enjoyed his experience here because he was able to be himself. He said he is in hotels a lot of the time because he's constantly bombarded by people,” he told the outlet. “He was very down to earth and very chatty. For someone like that to come through our doors was brilliant. He played with and bought a few guitars. I'm sure he will be back.”

The store posted a video snippet of Depp’s arrival by helicopter, along with photos of the items that he bought. On their Facebook account, Hemswell Antique Centres posted more photos of Depp’s visit, including a rare group photo with the store staff. 

“Starstruck staff can’t quite believe who walks through the door! As a secret operation is revealed within the last half hour of their working day!” the caption read.
