Born on Jun. 9, 1963, Johnny Depp is known for his iconic roles in films like “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Edward Scissorhands,” and many others that have solidified his reputation as one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors. Over the years, he’s been celebrated for his chameleon-like performances and his passion for portraying complex, unconventional characters. Depp has always leaned into roles that challenge the norm, from eccentric outcasts to tortured geniuses.

He dove into another intriguing project with the movie, “Day Drinker,” in which he stars alongside “Outer Banks” actress Madelyn Cline and Oscar-winner Penélope Cruz. The film is directed by “The Amazing Spider-Man” director Marc Webb. On Apr. 14, 2025, Lionsgate officially announced that production was underway in Spain.

This chapter in Depp’s career followed a tumultuous period in his personal life, including his widely publicized defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard, who has since relocated to Madrid, Spain. After the media frenzy surrounding the trial, Depp returned to film with “Jeanne du Barry,” a French-language biopic in which he portrayed King Louis XV that opened the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. He also returned to directing with “Modì: Three Days on the Wing of Madness,” a film centered on Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani.

At a Cannes Film Festival press conference in May 2023, Depp addressed the perception of a career comeback: “I keep wondering about the word comeback because I didn’t go anywhere.” He added: “... Maybe people stopped calling out of whatever their fear was at the time. But no, I didn’t go nowhere. I’ve been sitting around.”

In “Day Drinker,” Depp, 61, portrays a mysterious and possibly dangerous guest aboard a lavish private yacht. His character crosses paths with a sharp-witted bartender on the boat, portrayed by “Glass Onion” star Cline, 27. The story quickly evolves into something darker, as both characters are caught in a tangled web involving a powerful criminal figure, played by Cruz. As the synopsis teases, their lives are connected in ways “no one saw coming.”

This film marked Depp’s significant return to Hollywood. It is his first major studio role since starring in 2018’s “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” part of the “Harry Potter” universe. That alone sparked considerable buzz around the project.

The “Day Drinker” ensemble cast includes rising stars Manu Ríos and Arón Piper, alongside seasoned actors Juan Diego Botto and Anika Boyle, adding even more depth to the film’s lineup.

Depp and Cruz, 50, share a long-standing on-screen chemistry, having previously co-starred in “Blow” (2001), “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” (2011), and “Murder on the Orient Express” (2017).

The first released image of Depp in character showed the Oscar-nominated actor holding a drink and gazing ominously off-camera, setting a moody tone. Director Webb expressed his enthusiasm about the film, saying:

“I’m excited to be starting production with Johnny, Madelyn, Penélope and this incredible cast.”

He added:

“We’re in a beautiful location with a fantastic crew and a thrilling, ferocious story to tell,” and concluded, “This is gonna be fun.”
