John Stamos Tears Up As He Confesses 'Full House' Co-Star Jodie Sweetin Helped Him Get Sober

John Stamos has been a household name since the early 1980s when he rose to fame in the role of Blackie Parrish on "General Hospital." More TV work eventually led him to his most iconic role as Uncle Jesse on "Full House," and this only cemented his status as a handsome hunk of his time. The last few decades have seen the actor continue to work in television and even reprise his role in the reboot, "Fuller House."
But beyond his acting work, Stamos has also had quite the journey in love. After dating and marrying model Rebecca Romijn in the mid-1990s, the couple ended up divorcing 7 years later. In the following years, Stamos wasn't linked to anyone romantically, so it was all the more heartbreaking when he began to voice his desire to have children. It's funny to think that although his character in "Full House," Uncle Jesse, was the rather irresponsible one, Stamos was nothing like that in real life. It seemed that the heartthrob was then just waiting to find the right woman to settle down with.
Then finally, he met model and actress Caitlin McHugh and their story is an absolutely adorable one. After they met while working together, the couple's romance didn't begin immediately. But eventually, things fell into place. They have been married since 2018 – the same year they welcomed their son.
But before Stamos was able to obtain his dream life, he had some personal hardships to overcome. Fortunately, he had his very close friend and former co-worker Jodie Sweetin there to support him on his path to getting sober.

Even with all of his success as an actor, it seems that the role Stamos wished to play all his life was as a father. Even while he played Uncle Jesse, it was clear that he had the dad gene in him. He told ET:
"It's just taken me a lot longer than I anticipated. It would be a tragedy if I didn't have children and I finally found the right woman — the perfect woman."
Stamos found the perfect woman, McHugh. In an interview with Us Weekly, he described McHugh as a "gentle, kind, graceful soul who would be a good mother." They both clearly knew that this relationship was the one and therefore wasted little time in taking the next steps.
According to Us Weekly, Stamos and McHugh tied the knot on Feb. 3, 2018. McHugh was 31 years old, while Stamos was 54 years old.
Just over two months after their wedding, Stamos and McHugh welcomed their first son together. It was clear that Stamos' status as everyone's favorite uncle on television had gotten an upgrade.
The actor has given credit to his wife for helping him straighten out his life. "I wasn't deserving of it yet I think. But six years ago, I sobered up and I became a better person. And when Caitlin came around, I recognized it immediately. I said, 'I have to be good for that to make it work,'" he said.
The person Stamos credits the most in helping him become sober is Jodie Sweetin. She is best known for her role as Stephanie Tanner alongside Stamos as Uncle Jesse in “Full House.” The two share a special bond that goes beyond what we saw on the small screen.

The two are so close that Stamos revealed Sweetin helped him throughout his struggle with addiction, a struggle he kept out of the public eye for many years. The revelation came at the Writers In Treatment award ceremony in 2019, where Sweetin received the Experience, Strength and Hope Award for her memoir “unSweetined.” During the ceremony, Stamos gave a speech explaining how Sweetin helped him through his struggle with addiction.
It is no secret that Sweetin struggled with addiction for a while. The actress has been sober for over a decade. Since overcoming addiction, she obtained a degree in drugs and alcohol counseling and, as it’s recently been revealed, helped Stamos through his struggle with substance abuse too.
“It took me a long time, a long time disappointing everyone who cared about me, culminating in a terrible DUI where I could have killed somebody,” Stamos said. “I hit rock bottom.”
He revealed that Sweetin was the only person in his life at that moment who could get through to him and help him get sober:
“Jodie lovingly allowed me to walk my own path and when I finally humbled myself to ask for your help, I realized that the perky little blabbermouth had become the master of wisdom and was right by my side during some of the most difficult days of my life.”
The actor explained how Sweetin organized 12-step programs at his home and on the set of “Full House.” Stamos had his first child with McHugh in the spring of 2018 and accredited Sweetin with his family knowing him as a sober man.
“Thank god, my wife and my new son will only know me as a sober husband and father,” he said. “This is Jodie’s legacy in my life.”
We’re so proud of both John Stamos and Jodie Sweetin for moving forward with their recoveries. Do you have a special person in your life who helped you through a dark time too? Let us know, and make sure you pass this along to your friends and family!
