Being in the limelight since the age of 17, Jessica Simpson has often spoken about the pressures she has faced regarding her body image and growing up in the public eye as she navigated a music career. After putting on weight with her three pregnancies, public scrutiny surrounding her body image only became worse. The singer has since embarked on a holistic health journey that saw her adopt healthy habits, which led her to lose over 100 pounds in just one year.
Simpson is an American singer, fashion designer and actress. She was signed to Columbia Records in 1997 at the age of 17 after performing for years in her church choir. Her debut album “Sweet Kisses” was released in 1999, followed by her sophomore release, "Irresistible" in 2001.
Outside of her success as a singer, Simpson is known for the time she was married to fellow pop star Nick Lachey. The couple was married in 2002, and they became the subject of a new reality series called “Newlyweds,” which chronicled their lives as they figured out what it was like to be married.
They stayed together for four years until they separated in late 2005. Their divorce was finalized in 2006. Four years later, she found love with NFL star Eric Johnson, whom she ultimately had three children with — Maxwell, Ace and Birdie.
Although Simpson struggled with her physical appearance throughout her career, it appears that the actress became confident through time as she constantly shared photos of herself on social media and she didn't mind sharing her bare face with the world.
In July 2023, Jessica Simpson shared a snap of herself on her official Instagram account. To celebrate her 43rd birthday that day, the singer wore a vibrant red robe, a minimalist necklace and a pair of hoop earrings. She told her followers that her look was “makeup free” but seemingly backpedaled as she concluded the post with “kinda” as she admitted she'd curled her lashes.
Simpson received many greetings and praises from her followers as they noted that less makeup brings out her natural beauty. “Less is more! Happy Birthday beautiful mama!” one wrote. Even celebrities took the time to greet her like her sister, Ashlee Simpson, who commented, “Happy Birthday my beautiful sister love you so very much.”
Despite the positive note of some of her followers, there were a few people who called out Simpson for lying on social media as they pointed out that the look wasn’t completely make-up-free.
“You look lovely, but please don’t lie about not wearing makeup!... It’s irresponsible to put this message out there, as many in the comments are wondering why they don’t look this way makeup-free,” one wrote.
Although there was some negativity in the comments section of her post, there were others who defended her from trolls.
“Why is everyone feeling the need to put this woman down?... Let’s celebrate her for all things amazing,” one wrote.
Even though Simpson was feeling herself in her social media posts, she still struggles with insecurities as she previously opened up about her skin struggles in an old interview.

Speaking with Refinery29 in 2020, the fashion designer recalled having eczema since she was a kid. She was also a cheerleader during her younger years, and there was a time when she wanted to wear a varsity jacket immediately after a game because she had “so many bumps” on her skin. Her insecurity led her to change her fashion sense to hide flare-ups. She also hoarded over-the-counter creams in hopes of relieving her skin condition.
Although the singer managed to accept what happened to her skin later in life, her insecurities returned after she gave birth to her baby.
"I would be cradling my baby or breastfeeding, and my husband would take photos and I would be so embarrassed," she said.
Fortunately for Simpson, a doctor prescribed her Eucrisa which removed her flare-ups in a span of weeks. Following this, the superstar found confidence again and managed to embrace the natural side of herself after years of covering her face with heavy make-up and wearing hair extensions.
"I'm very into embracing my natural beauty… I'm embracing all of it,” she told the publication.
Simpson also encouraged other people to be honest with themselves about their flaws, whether it’s something on the outside or the inside.
"I encourage everyone to be open and honest about their flaws, whether it's eczema or something you're going through emotionally,” she said.
Regarding her other beauty routines, Shape reported that Simpson loved using bizarre products, especially when the pandemic hit. One of her favorite items is an anti-inflammatory device that she places everywhere on her body such as her chest, scalp and stomach.
