Is Your Life In A Rut? Here Are 9 Tips To Get You Back On Track For A More Exciting Future

Jun 12, 2018 by apost team

Before we even know what's happened, we come to the realization one day that our life has fallen into the same old routine. Day after day, and sometimes even hour after hour, you can practically set your watch by what you are going to do next, and that predictability makes your life a mundane series of uneventful and unfulfilling moments.

Being in this kind of rut can very easily lead to depression and a feeling of complete lack of accomplishment in your life if it lasts for an extended period of time. There are a few things to do to turn this around and and get your life back on a productive and positive track.

1. Keep a Diary

Oftentimes, putting something down in writing gives it an entirely new perspective. It gives it a tangibility that it didn’t have when it was just swirling around in our head as a potential issue in our lives. So, keeping a daily journal where you can describe your feelings in great detail, then reading them back can help you to see what is wrong in great detail and find a solution. Reflection is key.

2. Daily Physical Activity

Very often we don’t realize how little we actually move around. Getting caught up in a job where you sit for 8-10 hours a day in a cubicle and only get up for a half an hour or less to go grab something to eat is no way to spend the majority of your day in a physically healthy way. This can not only make a person fatigued, but it can also lead to depression.

Bring a pair of walking shoes to work and start to take a lunch break that takes you outside and around the perimeter of the building on a walk. You can even add another walk or physical regimen to your daily schedule after work or dinner for an additional physical pick-me-up to the end of the day.

3. Organize, Organize, Organize!

Getting into a go-nowhere routine can often happen because you bite off far more than you can chew when it comes to work projects and and even multiple daily family activities. Take all of your scheduled and impromptu plans and write them down in a daily activity planner. Then, “chunk” them into smaller tasks and begin to designate them in terms of what is important to do first and what can wait. Once things become less overwhelming, it will leave you time to add in other new activities that you have been wanting to do but haven’t found the time for just yet.

4. Focus On Health

Sometimes we don’t even realize how unhealthy we are until we consciously keep track of our eating habits and how they are affecting our overall outlook and level of activity. There are foods that slow us down physically and mentally, including a diet high in greasy foods or a lot of carbs.

There are also a multitude of physical issues associated with dehydration including headaches, constipation, and kidney stones. This can lead to feeling unmotivated to change our lives. Simply taking the steps to keep track of what you are eating and if you are drinking enough water could alleviate a sluggish feeling that is keeping you from making positive changes and being on track to a healthier lifestyle as well.

5. Avoid Cabin Fever

Cabin fever doesn't only affect people during the dead of winter. Many people live in extremely hot climates and spend the majority of their day indoors in an air-conditioned environment. This can lead to a feeling of isolation and anxiousness to experience something new. Make a conscious effort to schedule a time during your day to get outside, no matter what the weather might be. Just this small effort will make a huge difference in altering your mood and giving you a push to alter your schedule on a daily basis.

6. Stop Flying Solo

It’s very easy to start to ignore invitations from friends or stop answering your phone because you just don’t think you have anything interesting to talk about or share with your friends and family. Instead, you should remember that those same friends and family are there to be your guide through life. They are there to support you through the good and bad times, and they will be helpful in giving you advice as to how you can work your way out of these negative feelings.

7. Create New Experiences

One of worst things about social media today is that it can give us a false perspective of someone else’s life. Some people, who seemingly post pictures all day long, can give the impression that their life is full of grand events and new experiences virtually every day. It can give anyone a complex about their own life and a feeling that they are boring in comparison.

Instead of it making you feel like giving up on ever changing, let it be an incentive to making an effort to creating new experiences. Look up events each week and start to leave your comfort zone. Go places you would have never though of going before. Start small and then add more and more activities and when you feel comfortable, start posting your own new experiences on social media!

8. Find Motivation

Quite often, the reason we don’t make changes in our life is because we aren’t sure where to begin. Like many things, finding a voice to guide us along in the beginning can be an integral part of actually making any changes.

9. Relieve Your Anxiety

Take the time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to schedule a day of relaxation. This is the best way to clear your mind of any problems and “work clutter” that is keeping you from mindfully organizing your life and finding motivation to do new things. It is also something to look forward to that will keep you in better spirits as you begin your journey into new life experiences and is a great way to get your mind and body back on the road to a positive lifestyle.

Practicing these few tips to alleviating the predictable daily routine should put you on the road to a more exciting and fulfilling life that you have been wanting and deserve.
