Irritated Pilot Gave A Crash Course On In-Flight Passenger Etiquette For ‘Selfish And Rude’ Passengers

It seems like almost every day, someone has a hard time when it comes to flying, whether the problem is related to seating disputes, bad service, or delays. With planes, comfort is a major factor when traveling, and airlines are known to take full advantage of this by charging extra for more favorable seats. For some, the extra charges are just a small price to pay for comfort, and they are willing to fork out extra for it. But for others, they just sit down and hope for the best during their flight.

While flight attendants and air marshalls are forced to deal with unruly passengers on a daily basis, the captain of the plane definitely holds the most power up in the air. In a now-viral moment on social media, an American Airlines pilot lectured “selfish” and “rude” passengers in an impassioned speech.

Comedian Anna Leah Maltezos uploaded the clip online in July 2023, which has been viewed more than 4.4 million times on Instagram. The pilot’s speech blasted through the intercom as passengers continued to board the plane. He issued a stern reminder:

“Remember, the flight attendants are primarily here for safety. After that, they’re here to make your flight more enjoyable. They’re going to take care of you guys but you will listen to what they have to say because they have to represent my will in the cockpit or in the cabin and my will is all that matters,” he said.

As the American Airlines pilot went on with his lecture, he also gave them a crash course on in-passenger etiquette.

“Be respectful to one another. I shouldn’t have to say that. You people should treat people the way you want to be treated but I have to say that in every single flight because people don’t and they’re selfish and rude and we won’t have it, okay?” he asked. “Stow your stuff. Get it out of everybody else's way. Put your junk where it belongs."

The pilot also blasted inconsiderate passengers whose phone volumes were cranked up to the highest volumes.

"The social experiment on listening to videos on speaker mode and talking on a cellphone on speaker mode, that is over," he added. "Over and done in this country. Nobody wants to hear your video. I know you think it's super sweet, it probably is, but it's your business, right? So keep it to yourself.”

He also asked passengers not to drool and sleep on the people beside them. As for the unlucky middle seat takers, the pilot said that it was his “gift” for them that they should take both left and right armrests for the entire flight.

Many people online praised the pilot for keeping it real on his reminders.

“He’s not wrong. For him to say this, that means he’s fed up with all these childish adults,” a user commented on Maltezo’s recording of the announcement.

“If you're offended by this speech, congrats, you're the problem. Lol,” another commented.

“If you’re gonna act like a 6th grader on a field trip, then you deserve to be talked down to like a 6th grader on a field trip,” someone agreed.
