Iconic Supermodel Twiggy Still Looks Stunning Today At 74

Over the past decades, there have been countless supermodels who rose to fame thanks to their unique beauty and the way they presented themselves through fashion and style. Twiggy was among them as she became a symbol of beauty when she was discovered in 1966.
The model and fashion designer, whose real name is Lesley Lawson, was born on Sept. 19, 1949. She was raised in Neasden, a suburban area of London in the United Kingdom.
At an early age, Twiggy became interested in fashion as her mother taught her how to sew. She later used this skill in order to make her own garments.
In an article she wrote for British Vogue, first published in 2019, the model recalled the time when she was only 14 years old. At the time, she started hustling and got a Saturday job as a hairdresser.
She would use the money she earned to buy clothes on Abingdon Road in Kensington
“At that point, I was just a regular girl in Neasden. Monday through Friday, I put on the same uniform to go to the local grammar school: a white shirt, red tie, and a navy plated skirt that I always got in trouble for rolling up at the waist to make it shorter,” she wrote.
Twiggy became a cultural phenomenon overnight, but even though her fame faded from the spotlight after her prime years, the supermodel didn’t retire and still continued to work in the fashion industry. Read on below to find out more about what she looks like and what she’s up to after her massive modeling career.
Even though Twiggy was only 14 years old, the model said her parents would let her go to a mod club (mod being a fashion style that arose in Great Britain during the 1950s that was stereotyped as modern, consumer-driven and heavy on partying). She would observe what the older girls were wearing and try to copy them, but she always put her own twist on it and made the clothes that she and her best friend would wear.
Later on, one of her friends suggested that she should get some test shots that are often used for modeling. She then decided to switch up her style and chop her hair short, even though she loved her long locks that were down to her shoulders.
Little did she know, her career would take off from that big decision.
“After a bit of hesitation, I agreed to the chop, and it launched my fashion career nearly overnight. The journalist Deidre McSharry met with me a few weeks after seeing my picture, then ran a story in The Daily Express declaring me ‘The Face Of ‘66,’” she wrote, then added that former American Vogue editor-in-chief Diana Vreeland decided that she was “it.”
“My life became a whirlwind,” the model added.
The next few years of her life were completely transformed as she collaborated and worked with legendary photographers such as Richard Avedon, Bert Stern, and David Bailey, as well as wore clothes from some of the best fashion houses like Saint Laurent and Pierre Cardin.
Unfortunately, her life was not only full of glitz and glamor. According to a report by The Guardian, she went on to marry actor Michael Whitney in 1977. They had a child together named Carly.
Her then-husband had problems with alcoholism, which became the root cause of their marital woes. Years later, when their daughter was going to celebrate her fifth birthday, the actor collapsed and passed away.

In 1988, Twiggy remarried and has been in a relationship with Leigh Lawson ever since.
According to an article published by the Daily Express in 2018, Twiggy “retired” four years after her career took off, but that didn’t mean she stopped working altogether.
The model went on to make movies, release music, become an actress, design clothes, and more, which meant that she continued being busy.
Twiggy explained her work ethic decades after her massive career: “I pick and choose what I do now and don’t really say ‘yes’ to things unless I feel passionate about them, which at this time of life is very important… I think I deserve that at my age.”
Regarding her personal life, Twiggy has become a proud grandmother as her daughter had one child of her own, and her stepson had two.
“I’m number one babysitter – and very happy to be. They are small for so little time and if you miss that, it’d be terrible,” she added.
In 2023, Twiggy turned 74, and the model continued to be active in the world of entertainment in the form of a podcast titled “Tea With Twiggy,” which she described as an “intimate weekly chat” with some of her closest friends as they sip on a nice cup of tea.
She also loved sharing new and throwback photos on her Instagram account to keep her fans updated about her life.
In one snap shared in 2022, Twiggy posed along with her daughter for a Mother’s Day greeting post.
Fans took to the comment section to praise the model’s timeless beauty, as one wrote: “Your still beautiful & so is your daughter ❤️”
“Absolutely beautiful 😍,” one commented.
