It’s been over 15 years since Nadya Suleman, a California woman, made global headlines after she delivered octuplets. At the time, Suleman already had six other children, including a pair of fraternal twins. The Suleman octuplets made history as they became the first set to past their infancy. After capturing global attention when she gave birth to the world’s first surviving octuplets, the single mom of 14 became known as “Octomom.”

While the hype of Octomom and her large family eventually died down for a while, Suleman and her children are back in the headlines with a new six-part documentary series titled “Confessions of Octomom,” as well as a film “I Was Octomom,” based on their life story. Over the years, Suleman navigated the immense challenges of raising such a large family, often under intense public scrutiny and global criticism. She has now offered a glimpse into her life, shedding light on her parenting philosophies, financial struggles, and the realities behind the media’s portrayal of her family.

In the documentary, she opened up about the trials of raising 14 children as a single mother and how well-adjusted her children have turned out despite the circumstances.

“My family and I are taking our life back,” she said. “I’m not Octomom. I’m not this compartmentalized caricature. I’m a mom. (This is) a story of strength, survival and success despite all the odds against us.”

The response to Suleman’s initial story had been far from sympathetic, especially since she already had six children conceived via IVF that she needed help taking care of at the time of the octuplets’ birth in 2009. While the image presented to the world was that of an unemployed single mom of 14 kids living with her parents, Suleman debunked this narrative in the documentary and a subsequent interview.

“There was this false narrative spun, like I was this unemployed welfare recipient,” Suleman said.“It was not the case at all.”

While she has now been able to set the record straight, Suleman spent years feeding into the media’s narrative about her. To support her family as a single mother, she sold pictures, gave interviews and even starred in an adult film. In 2013, she stepped away from the limelight to focus on her life and her children, going as far as ditching the name “Nadya,” a nickname she had used for a time.

While many may have wondered why Suleman went to such lengths to conceive many children, for the mom of 14, who used the sperm of a platonic friend to conceive for the first time, motherhood was always the dream. Growing up lonely as an only child, she said she had always wanted a big family.

“When I set my mind to achieving a goal, I am laser-focused,” she explained. “I may have possibly overachieved with kids. I didn’t intend on having this many.”

Explaining how she could afford the expensive IVF treatments, she revealed:

“Instead of buying a house I bought in vitros,” she said. And contrary to popular belief, “no taxpayer dollars went to (my procedures). Working at a hospital, I saved well over $100,000, and I paid for everything.”

Despite the difficulties, Suleman is proud of the job she’s done raising her kids.

“I’ve managed to raise them into healthy, well-adjusted children that are grounded, that are humble and above all kind and compassionate to everyone. So I’m very grateful,” she beamed.

In 2024, Suleman became a grandmother after one of her sons and his girlfriend had a baby girl. She called this “an incredible experience.” She continues to do her best to raise her big family.

“I’m just taking it day by day and doing the very best I can as a mom,” she said. “I think most moms are just trying to do their best.”
