I Don’t Just Need A Lover - I Need To Find My Best Friend

We all have a dream of finding the perfect lover. We want someone that will listen to our hopes and dreams, someone who will stand by us when you need them, someone we can open our heart to. You want to find someone who will be with you, years down the road. 

However, it can be quite scary looking for that person.

There are so many difficult rules when it comes to dating today. People say that a lover should be sexy, attractive, strong, brave, reliable, and romantic. They are supposed to be perfect. But finding perfection in love is not something that happens easily. Finding that perfect person who completes you is next to impossible.

This is the reason that I do not want a lover. No, I am looking for my best friend instead.

I am looking for that person who I can be myself around. I don’t want to have to put on makeup and wear stylish clothes every single day. I want to be bare-faced, dressed in sweats and a baggy old t-shirt, making breakfast together on a lazy Sunday morning. I don’t want to feel as if I need to be someone I’m not just to impress my significant other. 

I want to be able to laugh with the person I pick. I want to stay up late into the night and talk about our dreams together. We should have small adventures and big ones. We should know everything about each other. 

I want to be able to talk to someone openly about all of my fears, regrets, and heartaches. I want them to be encouraging and helpful. I want them to be there when I need them to be, and of course I will always be there to do the same for them. I want to be with someone who will just sit next to me on the couch and enjoy my company, without having to say a word. 

I want to find my best friend. I want them to be someone who will go out dancing or who will stay home and binge-watch the latest Netflix series with me. I need someone who loves me and can be completely honest when I need it. They will need to know all of my secrets and inner dreams. I want someone who will talk about the things that really matter and the things that don’t.

I want to find the person who will make me laugh often and love a lot. I need someone who may make me mad at times but who will always be there for me. 

This will be my best friend.

This world has it backwards. Love is more about finding your best friend than about finding a lover. You have to be compatible on many other levels, not just sexually. That will come-don’t worry.

I want to find the person who will love and understand me, flaws and all. They will love me for my quirkiness and weirdness. That is what I am searching for.
