How Your Dog’s Bowl Is Making You Both Sick

When most people think about the most germ-infested areas of their home, the bathroom probably comes to mind. However, you probably aren’t aware that your house actually holds more germs in an unsuspecting place. If you own a dog, you might want to be aware of this surprising fact. 

It’s easy to overlook your dog’s food bowl through all of your other household cleaning duties. If your dog only eats dry types of food, this area of the home is probably the last place on your list you think to disinfect.

However, these bowls are breeding grounds for both yeast and mold due to the remnants the food leaves behind.

Although it’s unfortunate to think that when these dirty bowls go overlooked, our dogs are ingesting harmful bacteria, the germs can have larger effects that don’t only impact our pets. Exposure to the germs from these food bowls can infect the air and cause sickness in humans as well. 

This shocking information was found in a study conducted by NSF International. 30 everyday items were inspected from 22 different homes, landing food bowls for pets at number 4 on the list of dirtiest places in the home. Food dishes of pets only ranked below your kitchen sponge, your kitchen sink and the holder for your toothbrushes.
