Service workers tend to be looked down upon by many customers. People in grocery stores or in retail tend to receive much heat from despicable and impatient customers, whether it is something that they haven’t done or it was actually the customer’s fault – they are always on the receiving end of it.
As much as they can, these workers try to exude as much patience as they can. But aside from patience, two of the values that most retail workers have are honesty and integrity.
Integrity ensures that workers consistently do what is right, even when no one is watching, while honesty, on the other hand, means that they would uphold and speak the truth whatever the circumstances are.
In the case of one grocery store worker in Mississippi in July 2023, she was lauded by many for doing the right thing when she found a lost wallet that contained more than $6,000 in cash.
Ramey’s Marketplace employee Jennifer Sullivan spotted a wallet at a register and picked it up to check who the owner of the wallet was.
“I went around there and turned it around to see the name. When I saw it was a lot of money, I took my hands off,” Sullivan recalled to KWTX.
According to the employee, she immediately looked for the store manager, and they started brainstorming for ways on how they could reach and locate the owner of the wallet. The duo even had to check Facebook just to reach the owner, who turned out to be someone who lived near the area.
The manager and Sullivan immediately turned the wallet into the authorities, who helped them return it to the owner.

There have been many stories of heroism and honesty in the past, with some returning valuable items such as wedding rings, heirloom jewelry, bags, and even huge amounts of cash.
In the world of retail business, customers value and appreciate honest and trustworthy retail workers, leading to positive word-of-mouth and repeat business. Ultimately, honesty and integrity are two of the most important traits that any worker, despite the industry, must have.
According to KWTX, Sumrall Police Chief Elsie Cowart, the officer that received the information about the lost wallet, thought it was just a routine call of someone returning a wallet with no more cash, cards, or any identification. She pointed out that it was “very rare" that the money was still intact.
“In all of what’s going on in society, that person could have pocketed that money and not said a thing. She could have taken the money out; threw it in the garbage, but she chose to do what was right,” she told the outlet.
According to Sullivan, this was not the first time that she encountered a scenario like this wherein she had to turn in a huge amount of money that she found lying around.
“Everybody tells me whenn I found a lot of money one time at the hospital. They said, ‘I wouldn’t turn that in.' I said, 'If she didn’t die, he would have when he found out his money was gone,'” she told the outlet.
Sullivan even added that in a town like Sumrall, the people have to look out for one another. “I’m hoping anybody would have done the same thing,” Sullivan said.
