Whether it be Batman, Iron Man, or Spiderman, people have a fascination with heroes who selflessly decide to do and defend what is right. While superheroes in the DC and Marvel universes are wonderful, the heroes we have in real life are just as amazing. They may not wear flashy costumes or have superpowers, but they are heroes just the same.
One shining example of these unsung champions walking among us is a boy named D.J. Flores. At the time of this story, the then 9-year-old fourth-grade student from Fort Worth, Texas, was inspired to help homeless women after a school research project back in 2016. With some help from his mom, D.J. tried to make some women's life better by gifting them essential items.
All the great superheroes of our time have a backstory that explains why they got into the business of doing good for those around them. In some cases, they have great powers thrust upon them and, in other cases, they are motivated by tragedy. In the case of D.J. Flores, his great motivation was kindness. He had an innate need to help those people less fortunate than himself.
It all started with a school research project, according to CBS DFW News. In this project, D.J. learned about the struggles and plights of the homeless population. He became especially interested in the fact that one of the fastest-growing populations of homeless people was women. He learned that many homeless women are victims of some form of domestic violence. D.J. found himself quite concerned with these numbers and the results of his research. Despite his young age, he wanted to do something to help homeless women around his community.

Another common theme among superheroes is the fact that they can always come up with a solution to a serious issue. Every week, Adam West's Batman and Burt Ward's Robin would come up with a clever plan to escape one trap or another. While D.J. didn't have access to Bruce Wayne's fortune or gadgets, he did want to come up with a plan to assist homeless women.
He wanted to do his part to provide help to the vulnerable population he had learned about in school. D.J. came up with an idea called "Love in Packs," as CBS DFW reports. This involved the construction of survival kits that would be given to homeless women. The kits would include basic items that would help these ladies in their current conditions. Toothpaste, socks, and blankets were just a few of the items that could be found in one of these packages. D.J. also came up with the idea to put these items in a used purse or handbag for easy transport.
Just like Superman swooping in to save the day, D.J. and his mother drove around the community giving these survival kits to homeless women. D.J.'s heroic efforts were bound to get attention, and that occurred when a video of one encounter surfaced. This video has been viewed many times. In this recording, D.J. approached a homeless woman and handed her an old purse. Understandably, the woman looks confused as she takes the handbag from the little boy.
The confusion went away as she saw what was inside the bag. After that, a mixture of joy and relief came to her face, and she hugged D.J. in gratitude. When one sees how D.J. impacted this woman's life, it is clear that his efforts are worthwhile. It is also very evident that you don't need to be a certain age or size to be a hero. You just have to care about others and making their lives better.
