Living with a disability has long been considered a disadvantage despite scores of evidence to the contrary. Many people living with disabilities have gone on to break or set records and have made their mark on the world. For instance, many musicians have gotten to the peak of their careers despite being blind. Stevie Wonder, Andrea Bocelli, Clarence Carter, Ray Charles and Ginny Owens are just a few of the many blind musicians who were trailblazers in the entertainment industry.
Stevie Wonder has largely influenced different musical genres, including pop, gospel, funk, and jazz. The songwriter has also won 25 Grammys and a host of other awards. Consequently, he has inspired many other blind singers to follow their passion and dream of success.
Lavender Darcangelo is one of two blind singers who braved their fears to appear on "America's Got Talent" (AGT) in Season 18. The 27-year-old is autistic and is also a passionate and talented singer. She honed her singing skills through a mentorship program she joined in 2010 and first became an internet sensation in 2019 when a clip of her singing "Part of Your World" from "The Little Mermaid" went viral.
Since then, Lavender has not relented in pursuing her dreams. According to the Flutie Foundation, she started working on her first solo album in 2020 to bring more awareness to the autism community.
The determined talent went viral a second time on July 11, 2023, when she got the golden buzzer from judge Heidi Klum for her incredible performance on the "AGT" stage. The performance brought the audience to their feet as they cheered and cried simultaneously because of its emotional nature. Continue reading to get details of Lavender's performance.

When Lavender stepped up on the "America’s Got Talent" stage, guided by her adoptive dad Wil Darcangelo on July 11, 2023, to fulfill one of her dreams, she had no idea she would leave as an internet sensation. During her interaction with Howie Mandel, Lavender revealed that she started singing when she was 3-years-old although she didn't talk until she was four and a half. She also shared that she was autistic and blind.
When Mandel asked why she came up on stage, Lavender replied:
"Well, because I have a lot of dreams." She added, "I want to build a school where the classes are based off of what kids are naturally curious at."
After the introductions, the time came for Lavender to sing. When she started singing Irene Cara's "Out Here On My Own," everyone was blown away. Lavender received a standing from the audience and the judges.
Simon Cowell was the first to remark on her performance. He said:
"That was sensational. Honestly, sensational. Everything about that was just magical, magical. You have such a talent."
Lavender disclosed that "AGT" is her favorite show because it accepted her fully though she was different and felt abnormal. Sofie Vergara and Mandel also shared their glowing opinions, but the performance moved Heidi Klum to tears.
"I feel like I just fell in love,” Klum said. “This 'AGT' journey is an amazing journey, and I would love to be your cheerleader and hold your hand all the way till the finish line. What do you say?” she asked.
Klum proceeded to give an appreciative and emotional Lavender a well-deserved golden buzzer. She also ran to the stage to embrace Lavender and reassure her of her support. It was a wholesome moment that brought tears and joy to everyone watching.
