Hawaii Prepares For Extremely Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane

Hawaii, known as the Aloha state, is one of the world’s top tourism sites. However, this week the state will be a little less inviting and friendly, as those who live there are bracing themselves for a powerful and dangerous hurricane. Since Wednesday morning, August 22nd, the state is preparing to receive impacts from Hurricane Lane, which is nearing Hawaii at its current distance of just 500 mere miles southwest of the state.

This Hurricane Lane is currently being described by scientists as a category 5 hurricane. This type of storm is the strongest level that is categorized by the National Hurricane Center. This type of storm means that the winds are extremely fast.

In this case, the winds are reaching 160 miles per hour. These types of strong winds are able to rip down trees and power lines easily. However, what many people do not know, is that even from miles away, this storm is already bringing waves of powerful strength along the east coast of Hawaii.

While the storm continues moving in a westward direction, it is predicted to come extremely close to the main islands of Hawaii. Hurricane Lane could also potentially reach over the mainlands of the islands, but it is too early on to predict the exact path.

Even if the storm does not reach land, the dangerous storm will bring at least 20 inches of rain to exclusive parts of Hawaii, which includes terrorizing flash floods that can damage property.

Hawaiians should also be aware of the potential rockslides and landslides that may occur as a result of this storm.

Because Hawaii is so small in size and such a short distance from the West Coast, they often are missed by larger hurricanes that harm areas of the Gulf Coast. If Hurricane Lane destroys Hawaii, it will only be the second time that a category 5 hurricane reaches the islands.

The first was known as Hurricane John and it occurred in 1994. This doesn’t mean that Hawaii has gotten off easily, however. Two weeks ago they received unusual weather from Hurricane Hector, and another storm called Iniki resulted in damages that totaled over a billion dollars in 1992.

In a statement on Twitter, Hawaiian governer David Ige, is warning citizens of Hawaii to take this storm seriously.

He wrote that this hurricane is not well-behaved, and people should prepare themselves for the hurricane to make a significant impact on their beloved homelands.

Those who live in Hawaii are now following the governor’s suggestions by stocking themselves up with essentials like water, food, and toilet paper before the destruction occurs.

The National Weather Service has issued warnings of a brutal storm of the islands of Oahu, Maui, and some smaller islands that are owned by Hawaii. Predictions state that bad stormy winds can be noted as early as Wednesday.

News outlets are warning residents to prepare for the worst case scenario. Harsh weather from the storm can be expected to last until Saturday. To make matters even more complicated, the dangerous Mount Kilauea volcano that resides on the chain of islands is actually still in its active state, but experts say that the lava flow is currently paused.
