On the day of Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding, the entrance of St. George’s Chapel was decorated with a stunning display of delicate white flowers, which continued inside. The flower arches served as the perfect backdrop for the well-dressed guests shuffling into the castle, and for photos of the newlywed couple.

Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan didn’t want to let their wedding decoration go to waste, so they made sure the flowers were used for a very special purpose.

On Sunday, the day after the royal wedding, St. Joseph’s Hospice received a special delivery! Patients were surprised with large bouquets full of white flowers from the wedding, a gift from Harry and Meghan.

Each flower and bit of greenery in their flower arrangements have a special meaning.

Prince Harry wanted to make sure that his mother was well-represented at their wedding by incorporating Princess Diana’s favorite flowers into the mix. Harry, Duke of Sussex, chose white garden roses to accompany the arrangement of beech branches, birch, and hornbeam as well as foxgloves and peonies.

Prince Harry handpicked flowers from their garden at Kensington Palace for Meghan’s bouquet, which contained Forget-Me-Nots, also Diana’s favorite flower, as well as scented sweet peas, lily of the valley, astilbe, jasmine and astrantia, and sprigs of myrtle. Myrtle has been a traditional addition to royal wedding bouquets dating back to Princess Victoria, and brides typically have at least one sprig of it to symbolize hope and love.

Florist Philippa Craddock wanted to incorporate plants and flowers that bloom naturally in May. The London-based flower design company worked with conservation experts to grow pollinator-friendly plants for the display. By using flowers and plants full of nectar, the arrangements also served as a lovely eating ground for pollinators, such as bees and butterflies.

A large team of about 25 people helped create and install the flower arches, which looked beautiful in photos as a backdrop, but are even more breathtaking up close.

Hopefully the residents at St. Joseph’s Hospice are enjoying the smells and sights of their new flowers. What an unexpected and gorgeous gift!
