On Saturday Connery's family made it public that the academy-award winning Scottish actor passed away peacefully in his sleep at his house in the Bahamas. His son stated that his father had been unwell for some time, and his wife, Connery's wife Micheline Roquebrune, later revealed to the Mail on Sunday that her late husband had previously received a diagnosis of dementia, causing him considerable distress. "He was given his last wish to get away without much fuss," she commented.

Sir Sean Connery played the role of Henry Jones Sr in the 1989 movie Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade. Harrison Ford, the main star of the Indiana Jones franchise said, "He was my father…not in life…but in ‘Indy 3,'” in a statement to Variety. He continued by reminiscing about the "pleasure" he felt when he took "Sean Connery for a ride in the side car of a Russian motorcycle bouncing along a bumpy, twisty mountain trail and getting to watch him squirm." Below all of this, Harrison also had a lot of love for his on-screen father.

"God, we had fun — if he’s in heaven, I hope they have golf courses. Rest in peace, dear friend,” he said.

Sir Sean Connery was highly celebrated for his portrayal of James Bond from 1962 to 1983. The Bond films made Connery an international star. Ironically, Ian Fleming, author of the Bond novels, was said to have been initially opposed to the Scottish actor portraying the suave British spy but was quickly won over, so much so that he even added a Scottish heritage to Bond’s character in further novels. He starred in 7 different James Bond films, including movies that have made an indelible mark within Holywood such as From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, and Dr. No.

Harrison Ford isn't alone in sharing a tribute. His role as Agent 007 was not only highly esteemed but also remains the benchmark for other James Bond actors that followed him. Pierce Brosnan, another well-known James Bond actor, posted on Instagram saying "Sir Sean Connery, you were my greatest James Bond as a boy, and as a man who became James Bond himself."

The late Sir Roger Moore, who was another Bond star "always maintained Sean was the best ever James Bond", according to a tweet by his family.

Still, the Bond films are only one part of Connery’s legendary resume. In 1988, five years after his last Bond film, he even won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in the crime film The Untouchables. Other iconic films of his include Murder On The Orient ExpressRobin and Marian with Audrey HepburnThe Name of the Rose, and, last but not least, Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade, where he played the titular character’s father.

Sean Connery received a lifetime achievement award with a Kennedy Center Honor in 1999, and became Sir Sean Connery when he was knighted by the Queen in 2000. Other accolades include being named 1989’s Sexiest Man Alive by People Magazine and, in 1999, even the Sexiest Man Of The Century.

Since 1975 Connery was married to the French painter Micheline Roquebrune. His first marriage to the Australian actress Diane Cilento lasted from 1933 to 2011 and the two had a son together, Jason, Connery's only child. Although Connery spent most of his life in Spain or the Bahamas, he remained closely connected to his Scottish homeland and vehemently supported Scotland's independence.

The family of the Scottish actor further declared they were planning a private funeral for the beloved actor. A larger memorial service with guests other than the family will be organized only after the coronavirus pandemic.
