Superstar barrister Amal Clooney turns 42 years old today. 

To celebrate the human rights lawyer, we’re taking a look back at her extraordinary life as well as her amazing contributions to her profession.

Amal Clooney, nee Alammudin, was born on February 3, 1978, to parents Ramzi and Baria Alamuddin in Beirut, Lebanon. In 1980, however, her family immigrated to the UK as a result of the civil war. 

Amal graduated from Oxford University in 2000 with a BA degree in Jurisprudence. The following year, she entered the New York University of Law where she acquired an LLM degree.

The 42-year-old’s areas of expertise are Human Rights law and International law and is qualified to practice in both the United States and the United Kingdom. 

Throughout her career, Amal has had many high-profile clients including Wikileaks found Julian Assange,the King of Bahrain, and Yulia Tymoshenko, former prime minister of Ukraine. 

In 2013, Amal met Hollywood’s George Clooney and got engaged to him in 2014. The couple wed in a beautiful ceremony in Venice that same year, with none other than the former mayor of Rome himself Walter Veltroni marrying them. 

Three years later in 2017, the couple welcomed twins Ella and Alexander.

According to her husband, Amal did not accept his marriage proposal straight away. 

“I got down on my knee and said, ‘I couldn’t imagine spending the rest of my life without you.’ And she kept looking at the ring, and she was looking at me, and she was like, ‘Oh my God,'” Clooney told Ellen Degeneres.

“And we now know, because there was a playlist, how long it actually took, and it was, like, 25 minutes. Finally, I literally said, ‘Look, I hope the answer is yes, but I need an answer. I’m 52 and I could throw out my hip pretty soon. And she said ‘Oh, yes.’ And it worked out really well.”

This May, Amal is expected to be awarded at the Reporters Committee Freedom of the Press awards for her outstanding work in representing journalists being prosecuted for their work across the globe, as per Yahoo.

She will also host this year’s Met Gala alongside Donatella Versace and Rihanna.
