Happy Birthday Patrick Dempsey

Today marks Patrick Dempsey’s, aka ‘McDreamy’, 54th birthday. To celebrate the actors special day, we take a look back at Dempsey’s acting carreer as well as what he’s been up to since his shocking departure from ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ in 2015. 

Patrick Dempsey is best recognizable for his role as Dr. Derek Shepherd on the long-running medical drama ‘Grey’s Anatomy’. In 2015, after portraying Dr.Shepherd for a decade, the actor announced he would be leaving the show. 

"It had been long enough. It was time for me to move on with other things and other interests. I probably should have moved on a couple of years earlier," Dempsey told People in 2016.

Although Dempsey will always be associated with the iconic role, the actor had a successful career in acting since the 80s. The 54-year-old appeared in many stage productions and first appeared on the screen in 1985 in a small role for the movie Heaven Help Us.

The actor had his first big break at the age of 21 in the hit movie, In The Mood. Dempsey has since reprised roles in many succesfull Hollywood films, including the 2003 film ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ in which he starred alongside Reese Witherspoon. 

In 2005, Dempsey took on the iconic role of Dr. Derek Shepherd, a neurosurgeon on ABC’s ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, which earned him his nickname as ‘McDreamy’.

Following his 2015 departure from the show, Dempsey has been focusing on another passion of his: racecar driving. The actor even created his own racing team, named ‘Dempsey Racing’.
