Anyone who has long hair knows how enjoyable it is to be able to run your hands through it and style it in any way that you like. It can easily become a signature look that’s perfected more and more as the years go by. However, it takes time and effort to keep long hair healthy, and some people simply don’t have the energy or the means to keep up with it. On the other hand, some people actually prefer shorter hair, as it’s usually more manageable and easier to take care of.

Then there are the people who sit in between these stances as they continue to switch up their look every now and then. A man by the name of Ed Carthy decided that it was finally time to give himself a new look. He had been growing his hair out for about 18 months, leaving it long and curly. He also grew out his beard for about a year to the point that it became around 4 inches long.

It had all gotten a little too long for Carthy to keep up with, so he decided to make a change and scheduled an appointment with Directors Cut in Liverpool, England, in January 2016. After the barber got to work, Carthy was left looking like a completely different person than the one who first walked in through the shop’s doors. After getting a short haircut and having his beard shaved, Carthy’s handsome face was finally visible. Read on to learn how this man’s dramatic transformation turned out.

When Carthy first stepped foot into Directors Cut in Liverpool in January 2016, he resembled a Viking. His hair was long and curly, but his beard was the true star of his facial features. It covered a large portion of Carthy’s face, as the barber measured that it reached a whopping 10 centimeters (or 4 inches) in length.

Filmed by Dan Rackman —  a YouTuber who makes community-centered videos about events in Liverpool — a video of Carthy’s transformation has since gone on to be shared with the world. “Ed has been growing his beard for 12 months and his hair for 18 months,” Rackman wrote in his video’s caption. “This was the haircut where it all came off!”

While sitting in a chair at Directors Cut, Carthy explained that he was “done” with having long hair and a long beard. “I wanted to grow it as a bit of banter, see how big I could grow it,” he said. He mentioned that he liked how beards look, so he wanted to see how a long beard would look on his face. After realizing he liked the look on himself, he pushed it to the limits to see just how long his beard could really grow.

Although the time had come for Carthy to make a change with his appearance, he shared some of his fondest memories he had while having long hair and a long beard. Throughout the past year of having such long hair and a long beard to match, Carthy has been likened to some pretty notable figures.

His Handsome New Look

There was one occasion where a school-aged child asked Carthy if he was Santa Claus. The bearded man decided to joke around and replied, “No, but Santa’s my dad. Hopefully one day when I grow up, my dad will let me be Santa.” On a separate occasion, Carthy’s appearance was even compared to Jesus.

It seemed like Carthy wouldn’t be getting those same comparisons after his dramatic transformation. With a new short haircut and a freshly shaved face, Carthy looked like a completely different person. He went from looking like a Viking to a Marine!

Carthy was shocked by his new appearance but was definitely digging it. “Yeah, I feel like my face has come back,” he said. As he stroked his jaw, he was surprised by how it felt to finally touch his skin again, as it had been covered by his beard for so long. Carthy said, “It’s cold. It’s very cold. And that’s a strange sensation ‘cause I’ve not rubbed my face for nine, ten months.”

The transformation video has since garnered more than 3 million views and plenty of supportive comments. YouTubers couldn’t get enough of the man’s new look and were eager to leave their seal of approval in the comment section. One person said, “He seems like an amazing person. Loved all the stories about being confused for others with your long hair and beard.” Another user commented, “Wow he's really attractive.” It’s clear that everyone else has fallen in love with Carthy’s new look just as much as he has.
