Gwyneth Paltrow turned 50 in 2022 – and she's done it in style!

Ahead of her milestone birthday, the Academy Award-winning actress, businesswoman and mother of two took to Instagram on Sept. 22, 2022, to post a stunning black-and-white photo of herself jumping with glee donning only a simple string bikini. The caption read, "Musings on a milestone," followed by a prompt for readers to click a link to an essay she had written as she reflects back on her life before turning the big 5-0 on Sept. 27, 2022.

And what a life it has been. The daughter of Hollywood royalty – her father, was producer and director Bruce Paltrow and her mother actress Blythe Danner – Paltrow first found commercial success on the big screen in 1991's "Hook" as Wendy Darling.

The quintessential '90s movie star, Paltrow earned her place as one of Hollywood's darlings with "Seven," "Emma," "Sliding Doors," "Great Expectations," "A Perfect Murder," "The Talented Mr. Ripley," and "Shakespeare In Love," for which she won an Oscar in 1999.

She followed by the 2000s with memorable roles in "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "Shallow Hal," before rounding off the decade by jumping into the Marvel universe as Petter Potts in the "Iron Man" series of films.

Despite her extensive portfolio and natural charm on the silver screen, Paltrow has not taken on a lead film role since 2006. She married Chris Martin in 2003, and the couple had two children before divorcing in 2016. Paltrow has been married to producer Brad Falchuk since 2018.

Read on to find out what else Paltrow has been up to since scaling back on her film career and what her hopes are for the future as she marks 50 years on planet Earth.

Paltrow began to shift her focus from acting to wellness with the 2008 launch of Goop, at first a weekly newsletter that then spawned into an e-commerce behemoth, offering products such as jade eggs and coffee enema, as well as debuting pop-up shops, wellness summits, a print magazine, podcast and Netflix series.

The shift from actress to businesswoman coincided with Paltrow's own adjustment to her identity and personhood, particularly as she began steering away from the harsh Hollywood spotlight.

"I was just coming out of my 20s when you're in that sexy, young girl phase," Paltrow told People in 2021, adding, "And then you're like, 'Well, how do I reconcile who I am now with that?' For me, it was really about giving myself time to be a mother, and letting my body dictate where it was going."

She told the outlet that finally feeling fully comfortable with herself was the goal.

"Unfortunately, we're always looking at ourselves with a critical eye. I would love to get to a place where I don't do that anymore. I want to show up for myself in a more loving way, because it's all going south from here! There's nothing we can do about it."

In line with that mission, Paltrow posed in her birthday suit to mark her 47th birthday in 2020, a precursor to her 50th birthday bikini photo. Her journey to self-acceptance appears to still be going strong, as she writes in her essay, which she started by ruminating on her parents' 50th birthdays.

"I am struck by how, for both of my parents, 50 seemed like a reckoning. For my mother, it was a culmination of the wonderous, the highs, the loves, the art. For my father, a culmination of sorrows," she wrote.

Paltrow continued by sharing her unreserved and candid feelings about herself and her body upon turning 50.

"My body, a map of the evidence of all the days, is less timeless. A collection of marks and irregularities that dog-ear the chapters. Scarred from oven burns, a finger smashed in a window long ago, the birth of a child. Silver hair and fine lines," she wrote.

"And while I do what I can to strive for good health and longevity, to stave off weakening muscles and receding bone, I have a mantra I insert into those reckless thoughts that try to derail me: I accept.

"I accept the marks and the loosening skin, the wrinkles. I accept my body and let go of the need to be perfect, look perfect, defy gravity, defy logic, defy humanity. I accept my humanity," she added.

After acknowledging her "errors, which live in the shadows," she went on to contemplate her path going forward.

"I would like to slow down. I would like to retreat a little bit. I would like to make my circle smaller. I would like to cook dinner more. I would like to see misunderstandings become understandings. I would like to continue to open the deepest part of myself to my husband, even though it scares me," she wrote.

"I would like to tell anyone that had a negative experience with me that I am sorry. I would like to fully acknowledge myself."

Her musings touched a chord, not only with her fans but fellow actresses as well, including Demi Moore and Mindy Kaling, who said her "essay was so beautifully written."

While Paltrow ended her essay admitting that "knowing comes with time," it appears she's already shown she knows quite a lot.
