Groom Ends Marriage On Wedding Day After Bride Dances To Provocative Song At Reception

Over the years, marriages have been dissolved for many reasons. Some of these include the couple not seeing eye-to-eye, lack of communication, internal family feuds, financial constraints, infidelity, trust issues, incompatibility and a lack of affection. There have been unusual reasons as well, including one such story of an Iraqi couple that ended their union on their big day because of the wife’s music choice.
The groom ended their very new union when his bride preferred to dance to a song considered provocative at their wedding ceremony in September 2023. This event, which happened in Baghdad, has been recorded as the fastest divorce case in the country in the year 2023.
When it comes to marriage and divorce, the common phenomenon that many people can relate to or attest to is that no matter how short-lived the marriage is, it would usually exceed the wedding day. However, for the Baghdad couple, theirs did not live to see the light of the following day. It ended right there at the ceremony.
Amid the festive part of the wedding ceremony, the bride danced to the TikTok famous Syrian song "Mesaytara" by Lamis Kan. While the cadence and rhythm appeared to be a regular danceable song, the groom was offended by the lyrics. The translated version of the song defined dominance in the first-person narrative. The title itself means “I am dominant” or “I will control you.”
The opening part of the lyrics read:
“I am dominant; you will be ruled under my strict instructions; I will drive you crazy if you looked at other girls on the street; Yes, I'm dominant; You're my piece of sugar; As long as you're with me, you'll walk under my command; I'm arrogant, I'm arrogant."
As the song played, the bride danced away joyfully, seemingly oblivious to the fact that not all received her dance kindly. The groom's family also disapproved of her dancing to the song.
As per a report by Gulf News, the groom and his family were deeply offended when the newly wedded bride danced to the said song during the ceremony. The groom ended up canceling the wedding following a debate between the two families regarding the song.
This incident isn't an isolated one. An identical situation arose in 2022 when a man in Jordan called off his wedding due to the same song being played at the ceremony.
Apart from the issue surrounding Kan's song and weddings, other strange reasons have led to the premature termination of marriages. For instance, a bride in Mahoba, India, called off her wedding after her groom-to-be demonstrated poor arithmetic skills. She put him to the test by asking him to recite the multiplication table of two as soon as he arrived at the wedding venue.
A report from Tribune India read: “The groom ... reached the wedding hall on Saturday evening with his 'baraat' but the bride, who was suspicious of his educational qualifications, asked him to recite table of 2, before the garlands could be exchanged.”
He was unable to complete the task, leading the bride to exit the venue. One of the bride’s cousins revealed the groom’s family kept them in the dark concerning his education. The person shared that he “may not have even gone to school." They added: “The groom's family had cheated us. But my brave sister walked out without fearing social taboo.” The marriage was arranged, but both families reached a consensus to return the wedding presents.
