Actor Eric Dane, 52, best known for his role as Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan on the hit TV series “Grey’s Anatomy,” is opening up about his serious health condition.
Born on Nov. 9, 1972, in San Francisco, California, Dane made his television debut on “The Wonder Years” in 1988. He rose to fame with leading roles in “The Last Ship” and films such as “X-Men: The Last Stand” and “Valentine’s Day.” The American actor has been married to actress Rebecca Gayheart since 2004, and the couple shares two daughters, Billie Beatrice, 15, and Georgia Geraldine, 13.
Off-screen, Dane has been open about personal struggles. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the actor revealed that he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The announcement comes just as Dane, who plays the complex and often controversial character Cal Jacobs on HBO’s hit series “Euphoria,” was preparing to begin filming the show’s highly anticipated third season. Season 3 is set to premiere in 2026.
Also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, ALS is a rare and progressive neurodegenerative disorder that leads to paralysis of the muscles. Early signs often include muscle twitching, weakness in the limbs, and slurred speech. According to Mayo Clinic, ALS affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. As the disease progresses, patients gradually lose the ability to walk, speak, eat, and eventually breathe on their own.

Despite the diagnosis, Dane’s courage in sharing his journey brings greater awareness to a devastating illness. In the interview, the actor stated:
“I have been diagnosed with ALS. ... I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”
The actor’s optimism and ability to keep moving forward with such strength and resilience have already inspired many. Dane expressed his determination to continue his work:
“I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of ‘Euphoria’ next week.”
Dane also made a heartfelt appeal to the public and his fanbase during this emotional time:
“I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”
His request underscores the emotional weight of this journey, not just for him but for his loved ones as well. Dane joins a growing list of notable public figures who have faced ALS, including Stephen Hawking, Aaron Lazar and John Driskell Hopkins.
Without a doubt, Dane’s decision to speak out adds another powerful voice to ALS awareness and advocacy. Unfortunately, ALS currently has no cure. According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, individuals diagnosed with ALS typically live between three to five years, although there are cases where patients have lived significantly longer.
We send our heartfelt support and love to Dane and his family as they face this challenging chapter with courage and grace. May they feel surrounded by compassion, respect, and unwavering encouragement from all those who admire and care for them.
