“Grey’s Anatomy” has catapulted a lot of stars on television. The hit medical drama series is known for its gripping storylines, surprising guest stars and impeccable acting. One of the longest-running characters in the show is Dr. Owen Hunt, the then-Chief of Trauma and Chief of Surgery of the fictional Grey-Sloan Memorial Medical Center.

Played by Scottish actor and television director Kevin McKidd, Hunt is one of the well-loved characters of the show, next to his on-screen partner Sandra Oh, and lead star Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith Grey.

Aside from “Grey’s Anatomy,” McKidd also had various roles in film and television in the past. He was Mackenzie in Danny Boyle’s “Trainspotting,” he also starred in “Anna Karenina” as Count Vronsky, played Lucius Vorenus in “Rome” and Dan Vasser in “Journeyman.” McKidd also appeared in “Gunpowder, Treason & Plot,” for which he won a Biarritz International Festival of Audiovisual Programming — Best Actor Award, as well as in “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” where he played the sea god Poseidon.

McKidd’s life in front of the camera is as colorful as his personal life. So far, he had two marriages in the past. One with Jane Parker, where their marriage lasted 17 years. He went on to wed Arielle Goldrath not more than a year after their divorce was finalized. However, they too had a divorce finalized only on June 2023. Since then he has been dating his co-star, Danielle Savre, who plays Station 19 firefighter Maya Bishop on “Station 19” an interconnected show to "Grey’s Anatomy."

On June 27, 2023, Savre and McKidd went on a very adventurous date – a safari trip in Africa – which sent them even closer to nature. Keep on reading to learn more about McKidd, his relationship with Savre, and their trip to the wilderness!

Born in August 1973 in Scotland, McKidd had his hands dirty at a young and tender age. At 17, he worked at the Macallan distillery in Speyside and went on to work with the Lumsden family of coppersmiths.

Attending Seafield Primary School and Elgin Academy in Scotland, he became interested in pursuing acting when he became part of the school’s drama group. Initially wanting to study engineering, McKidd attended the University of Edinburgh but left eventually because he wanted to join Queen Margaret University where he was accepted. He then joined Edinburgh University's student theater company, Bedlam Theatre, and became part of the improvisational comedy troupe the Improverts.

Later on in his career, he landed the role of the Roman Centurion Lucius Vorenus in the HBO and BBC collaboration “Rome,” which was instrumental in his casting as Dr. Owen Hunt in “Grey’s Anatomy.” He went on to win a Prism Award for Best Performance in a Drama Series Multi-Episode Storyline for his role, as well as multiple Best Cast Ensemble Awards they received throughout the years.

Adjacent to the “Grey’s Anatomy” storyline is “Station 19,” which is a spin-off of the show that follows the lives of firefighters in the same area in Seattle as "Grey’s Anatomy." One of its stand-out stars was Savre who plays Maya DeLuca-Bishop.

On June 2, 2023, photos of McKidd and Savre were publicized as they were spotted locking lips while on vacation. The two have acted together in various scenes in the many crossover episodes of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Station 19.”

Since then, the two have been public about their relationship, as they revealed it in the same month when McKidd’s divorce from Goldrath was finalized. They cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split and have sought joint custody of their children.

Savre is known primarily for her role in “Station 19” as Maya DeLuca-Bishop, who was one of the few bisexual characters in the “Grey’s Anatomy” television universe. Unbeknownst to many, she also revealed that she shares the same sexuality as her on-screen character.

Savre has been previously linked to Chicago Blackhawks hockey analytics/video analyst Andrew Contis but their relationship was never confirmed. In 2019, Savre talked to GCN Magazine and made a bold confession about her sexuality and being romantically attracted to both males and females.

"It just felt like it was time to at least reveal a little bit of my personal life. I wanted to be able to explain that I understand, and I see everyone and I get some of the struggles. Not everyone’s, everyone’s got different struggles and different paths and different journeys, but, I see them and I understand and you’re not alone. We all support each other in this community that we’ve created. So in the moment, it felt like the right thing to do."

After Savre and McKidd were spotted on a vacation in Italy, the two also went on an adventurous getaway in Africa. As shared on Instagram, McKidd and Savre visited Camp Chawa on Lower Zambezi in Southern Zambia, which they considered to be “the trip of a LIFETIME!”

“Our adventure was breathtaking, awe-inspiring, humbling, and uplifting, all because of you guys. Simon, Juliet, Nobby, Derrick, Eric, and everyone else we met made us feel like family. We miss you and we will be back! Thank you!” McKidd said on Instagram.

McKidd and Savre’s safari escapade was breathtaking, as they saw herds of elephants, monkeys, hippopotamuses, lions and crocodiles. They even went fishing, sightseeing and dining under the African sunset.
