A video of one grey and one red fox named Dixie and Muttias posted in May of 2020 went viral since it showed the two animals laughing and chatting with each other.

Foxes are one of the most clever and interesting animals in the world. That's one reason they appear in so many folk tales, picture books, and other media. Foxes remind people a lot of domesticated animals like dogs. They have some of the same behaviors. But foxes are harder to understand. Ultimately, they don't love humans in the way dogs do. They're fiercely independent. Foxes aren't happy helpers like dogs. They have their own goals and means to achieve them.

Though foxes aren't really pets, some people do keep them. One of those families recently uploaded a video of their foxes, Muttias and Dixie, to YouTube. Most people never see foxes up close. This family does, and they love sharing the experience with others. They see the way foxes interact with each other. And even if they don't understand it, they can at least demystify these animals for others. In fact, this video answered a lot of questions for the public. Many people left all kinds of interesting comments.

The video shows the two playful foxes, one grey and one red, rolling around, playing, and chattering with one another. Foxes make softer, higher-pitched noises than many people would guess. They are very similar to dogs in many ways, though.

After seeing the video, people guessed what the foxes were talking about. Some compared them to their friends who are always laughing. Others joked that maybe they were talking about hard sciences like physics. Whatever the foxes really were saying to each other, they'd be surprised to know that over a million people have now seen their conversation!

Typically, foxes have been known only as predators. Think of common expressions like "a fox in the henhouse." However, this video showed people a different side of foxes. They aren't sneaky and they aren't the enemies of people. They're affectionate, intelligent, and funny creatures who can make friends with each other and even with humans.
