Golden Retriever Hilariously And Adorably Struggles With Kitten In His Dog Bed

It’s an interspecies rivalry that’s been going on since what feels like the beginning of time: cats versus dogs. Even Hollywood has picked up on the rivalry with Lawrence Gutman’s widely popular “Cats & Dogs,” a 2001 comedy that pits the two species against each other in an intense, human-like and hilarious rivalry. But despite countless years of debate, cat lovers and dog enthusiasts don’t seem any closer to a consensus. With that said, the below video might settle things — and dog lovers won’t be happy. 

Thanks to Tiago Jacques, who uploaded the video in June 2021, we get to see the two species vying for dominance in what makes for one of the most adorable animal clips on YouTube. And that’s saying something, given how many cat and dog videos are on the internet!

In the 2-minute-long video, an absolutely minuscule kitten sits comfortably in the middle of a massive dog bed, luxuriating in the fuzzy comfort it offers. But in the blink of an eye, a golden retriever runs into the room, seemingly confused as to what is in his dog bed. The golden retriever approaches the kitten and begins to smell it, inspecting the intruder. Whereas some cats might be scared of a giant yellow object rushing toward them, this cute kitten isn’t phased. It just stays put and continues to relax. While we aren’t sure of the exact origins of this video — or what these two furry creatures are called — we loved this clip and had to share it with you.

Although the kitty seems unperturbed by the large dog that enters the scene, the golden retriever looks a bit agitated that such a small animal seems to have taken over the bed. 

After smelling and identifying the kitten invader, it looks like the dog doesn’t know what to do. It looks back and forth, seemingly unable to comprehend the circumstances. Eventually, however, Fido gets to work in an attempt to take back his bed. First, he tries barking at the feline intruder — but to no avail. The kitten just continues to nap. That’s when this golden retriever starts to push his head on the bed, trying desperately to reclaim his territory. But again, the kitten just doesn’t seem to care. 

The video ends with the golden retriever’s surrender; rather than fighting the kitten any longer, the golden retriever lies down on the bed next to the cat. Finally, the cat moves, coming to cuddle with her canine companion.

“The stereotype of cats and dogs is that when they get together, they fight like — well, cats and dogs. But this isn't necessarily the case; felines and canines can live harmoniously under one roof,” Mikkel Becker of Vetstreet.com explains in a column for Today. 

Becker points out that pet owners just have to pick the right candidates if they want their cats and dogs to get along. For example, dogs that have been socialized with cats from an early age get along better with their feline counterparts. And the same applies to cats. Beyond socialization, Becker advises that pet owners introduce the two species gradually.

“When you bring your new, carefully chosen kitty home, it’s important for her to have a gradual, supervised introduction to your canines. Mark certain areas of your home as off limits to your canine by blocking them with baby gates; provide high-rise areas in the home to which your cat can safely retreat as needed,” Becker writes.
