In an instance of art imitating life, comedian and actor George Lopez is taking the chance to reconnect with his once-estranged daughter, Mayan Lopez, in an interesting way. The “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” actor, 63, and Mayan have used television and social media to help them heal their family. The two are starring in his family show on NBC, “Lopez vs Lopez,” a show exploring family dynamics and issues that families all over America are facing: divorce, mental health, addiction, gambling, bankruptcy, estrangement and reconciliation.
George has been a well-known figure in Hollywood for decades and, in 2022, stepped into perhaps the most profoundly personal role of his career, playing himself in the sitcom, “Lopez vs Lopez.” While the show has the kind of humor that fans of the star have come to love, whether on television or in standup comedy, its underlying premise strikes an emotional chord. The series brings George together with his real-life estranged daughter, Mayan, to navigate the complexities of their relationship both on and off the screen.
But how did all this come about? Well, in 2020, Mayan posted a funny TikTok explaining how infidelity had broken her family apart. This caught the attention of Debby Wolfe, a producer who thought their family story would make a great show.
“My mom didn’t want me to post,” Mayan told Today. “So I don’t know how great of an influence I am. I didn’t listen to my parents, I twerked upside down and I aired out my family dirty laundry. But hey, that makes the foundation for a great show!”

George and his family have been through trying times, mainly due to the actor’s struggles, particularly with alcohol. He has also been judged for his actions in the public eye.
“In my private life, I’m not perfect,” George said. “I never have been. I’ve talked about it for years.
His health issues came to a low when he was diagnosed with a kidney condition that dates back to his childhood. However, the issue was neglected, and he ended up going into kidney failure and required a kidney transplant in 2004. Reflecting on the condition, he shared:
“Kidney disease is not painful; I mean it is painful because it shows up in fatigue. So, you’re always tired. It misled me to think that I was tired because I was working so hard when really my kidneys were shutting down.”
Amidst his health battles, George’s ex-wife and Mayan’s mother, Ann Serrano, donated her kidney to him after he faced some health struggles, ultimately saving his life.
“It’s amazing to be able to help another human being in this way. You’re giving the gift of life,” she asserted.
However, he would repay her in one of the worst ways – with a heartbreaking betrayal. George and the actress married in 1993 before welcoming their daughter three years later. Their tumultuous union worsened as George struggled with addiction and alcoholism.
Then, it was revealed that George had been unfaithful to Serrano. Although he promised to change, he cheated again, and this time, it was highly publicized in the tabloids. Serrano ultimately filed for divorce, and George lost the respect of his daughter. Fortunately, they healed from this and today, the three of them are on much better terms now, with Serrano saying she loves George as the father of her child.
