Kindness to others is a very important quality. Random acts of kindness are signs that the world is full of good people and that you can always count on a helping hand when you are in need. Nkosikho Mbele, a Shell gas attendant in South Africa, was rewarded with eight years worth of salary for helping pay for a stranger's fuel in May 2019.

Last May, a then 21-year-old Monet van Deventer, who works as an account manager in Cape Town, was driving to work when she noticed that she did not have enough gas in her car. Pulling into a Shell station, Monet began looking in her pocketbook for her card as the station’s attendant, 28-year-old Nkosikho Mbele, washed her windshield.

Thinking that she had left her card in one of her jackets back home, Monet told Nkosikho not to fill up her tank as she did not have enough money to pay him. Nkosikho came up with an unexpected compromise for the stricken motorist.

Nkosikho told Monet that the road she was traveling on, the N2, was too dangerous to go on without enough gas. As such, Nkosikho would lend Monet R100 (US$5.45) for her gas and she could return to the station to repay him the next time she was in the area.

Monet was touched by the kindness shown to her. According to News24, Monet said that it made her day to know that there are such caring people in the world like Nkosikho. Monet shared:

"I was just doing what anyone else would have done, from the heart."

Monet later shared news of Nkosikho’s good deed on facebook, where it quickly became a viral news story. The ever-humble Nkosikho tells reporters that he only did what he thought anyone else would do. Saying that he is guided by his heart, Nkosikho feels that there are no black people or white people.

As one race and one people, Nkosikho explains that we must work together. Addressing Monet’s specific circumstances, Nkosikho said that since it was early in the morning and still dark out, it would have been dangerous for her to get stuck on such a busy road.

As Monet and Nkosikho’s story spread, Monet and her friends set up a GoFundMe page to help Nkosikho. The story having been shared tens of thousands of times online helped Monet raise over $27,000 for Nkosikho, which is the equivalent of eight years salary for him. After hearing about the generous actions of their employee, Shell leaders announced that they would be matching the donations Nkosikho receives on the GoFundMe page so long as he donates the money to charity. Nkosikho is grateful for the outpouring of generosity, feeling that it is a blessing and proof that God is watching over him.

In the end, Monet and Nkosikho’s story shows that being kind to others is rewarding in a variety of ways. In addition to Nkosikho receiving a large sum of money, his act of kindness saw an entire community rally around him and celebrate him for his compassion.

What do you think of Monet and Nkosikho’s story? What would you have done if you were in Nkosikho’s shoes that day?
