At the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea in 2018, a French figure skater by the name of Maé-Bérénice Méité performed her routine to the soundtrack of a Beyoncé medley. The crowd seemed to love the routine and song choices, but even more so, the video of her performance has since spread over the internet, with the Beyhive –– what Beyoncé's superfans call themselves –– going wild for it.

It's clear from the beginning that Méité is not your typical figure skater. Opting to wear a slick black one-piece with pants, instead of the classical frilly skirt often worn by female skaters, Méité looks strong and independent from the get go. Her black one-piece is embroidered with gold detailing up the top, contrasting beautifully against the black outfit.

At the moment her routine begins, it isn't 100% obvious she's skating to a Beyoncé song. Soon it becomes clear the song is a cover of Beyoncé's "Halo", with the chosen version a softer take on the popular ballad, providing the perfect slow buildup in her routine.

Instantly, Méité begins doing her very modern choreography, something that isn't so typical in the figure skating world but nonetheless matches her unexpected song and outfit choices. She soon begins skating around and starting her many spins across the ice. Unfortunately she doesn't land one of them properly, but the others more than make up for it.

Before too long, the song has switched over to Beyoncé's iconic song "Run The World (Girls)", and the powerful vocals and strong beat perfectly match the remainder of Méité's routine. The Beyhive certainly seemed to love Méité's performance, with many posting their adoration to Twitter.

The skater appears to be well aware that many of her choices were not typical of the figure skating world, but Méité wears it proudly. Speaking with Cosmopolitan magazine, she explained: "It's different! But I'm different, too, so [going in] I was like, 'Why not go for it?' I wanted to do something that was very me, something fun, something I would enjoy!"

She certainly appeared to be having fun during her three-and-a-half-minute routine, enjoying some little dance moves along with an incredible spin to finish off her performance. Méité added in her Cosmopolitan interview: "[Her music] is crazy, wild, and fun. You can just dance to it, and that's how I am."

The Pyeongchang games was Méité's second time at the Olympics, with her debut at Russia's Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014. In order to qualify for this year's competition, during the European Champions she had to place higher than any other French skater, with the final choice coming down to the French Olympic committee. What's more, she competed at the 2018 Olympics while bouncing back from a tendon tear –– what a powerful woman!

She discussed these challenges with the New York Amsterdam News, stating: "This year was a really big challenge for me as last year I wasn't the top female skater in France. I have no solution but to bounce back and come back stronger. These Olympics mean a lot to me. To represent France for the second time is a real honor and privilege."

Despite the setbacks, Méité performed a stunning and empowering routine at Pyeongchang. However, due to one fall she placed ninth overall. Nonetheless, her strong performance proved that one can have a little fun while being serious and she empowered girls all over the world while doing so.
