Kelsey Grammer, best known for playing the role of the pontifical TV psychiatrist Dr. Frasier Crane for over 20 years, has opened up about his faith after playing Pastor Chuck Smith on the big screen.
In secular Hollywood, most stars don't openly admit their faith or discuss religion in public. However, Grammer, who once described himself as a religious man, was emotional when he talked about his best acting role and his special connection to his Christian faith.
Grammer earned several acting recognitions for his work on "Frasier" but he would be the first to admit that most people would not think of him as a religious person. However, the actor was raised as a Christian Scientist and was taught to pray and reflect on the Word of God as a child.
Yet he had several personal griefs and tragedies that tested his faith growing up. Because of these experiences, Grammer admitted that he got lost along the way, wrestled with his beliefs, and even doubted the presence of God because he was angry about the sad experiences in his life.
At 13 years old, Grammer lost his father, Frank, after he was shot dead in a home invasion in the Virgin Islands in 1968. Seven years later, his younger sister, Karen, was kidnapped, raped and brutally murdered at 18 years old.
More tragedy followed in 1980, when Grammer's half-brothers, Billy and Stephen, were killed in a suspected shark attack while scuba diving. By then, Grammer was suffering from depression due to his sister's death and turned to alcohol and cocaine.

For years, Grammer struggled with the addiction and had days when he could not hold it together. However, his foundation in the Bible and his understanding of religion helped him find his way back to the right path.
"I'm kind of a Bible guy. I've been reading the Bible all my life," Grammer said.
Grammer scanned the pages of the Bible for prayer, reflection and information despite wrestling and even rejecting his own faith. And then, after all the tragedy in his life, he was finally able to find "great peace" in Jesus.
"It's not cavalier – Jesus made a difference in my life. That's not anything I'll apologize for," he told USA Today.
Grammer was also quite emotional about his faith as he discussed "Jesus Revolution," his latest movie, on "Live with Kelly and Ryan." The actor said that he could relate to his role as Pastor Chuck Smith because he was also a man whose faith was tested. As an actor and a Christian, Grammer has been conscious about working to "elevate the human experiences" in the same way that religion is supposed to help the faithful.
Grammer also revealed that he's writing a book about his sister's tragedy that will shed some personal insights into how one recovers from such a horrific incident. He believes that so many people do lose their faith when faced with such an experience but Grammer hopes that his book will bring comfort to those who are struggling and do not know how to turn their life around.
