Added to the world of heel-less boot sandals, leg warmers, and fingerless gloves are the emerging fashion trend of flip-flop socks. That’s right, it’s a semi-sock thing you wear on your feet with flip-flops, and it’s taken the internet by storm.

What’s A Flip-Flop Sock?

Whether you think they’re an amazing or asinine idea, the buzz in fall fashion is all about the flip-flop sock. So, what are these things and are they really useful for anything?

Flip-flop socks have a couple different looks going on when it comes to texture and materials. Some are made out of regular cotton-poly blend and other standard sock materials, but the most popular seems to be the knitted version.

Yes, like the scarves your grandma knitted.

It’s a semi-sock. Some have both the toes and heels cut out and open to air. Other styles just have the toe portion cut out. Like other socks, you can buy them ankle, calf, or even thigh-high lengths.

What’s A Flip-Flop Sock Good For?

1) Warmer Feet During Seasonal Footwear Transition

Apparently, people just don’t want to give up their flip-flops for colder weather. The idea here is that you can comfortably wear the open toe design with flip-flops in the fall and winter months and still have warm feet... albeit cold toes and possible cold heels.

It’s the more fashion-forward way to wear socks and flip-flops without the unsightly sock toe wedgie. You now have a middle ground in seasonal footwear.

2) Pedicure Help For Colder Months

Reading through Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, one of the most practical applications for the flip-flop sock is for those getting a pedicure in chilly weather. It’s a nippy 50 degrees outside and your off to get a pedicure. Putting socks and a compressing shoe over a pedicure is a sure way to ruin your polish. Flip-flop socks are here to save the day.

3) Yoga Help

Apparently, yoga gurus say these help prevent slipping and sliding on floors without the restriction of a full sock. They’re also easy for on-the-go yoga classes where you don’t want to be burdened with taking sneakers on and off.

4) Overheating Feet Help

If you sleep in socks, you might relate to the struggle of your feet overheating with socks but being too chilly without them. Again, flip-flop socks to the rescue to bridge the gap between warm and breezy sleeping feet.
