If you’ve paid any attention to the media in the past decade, you’ve probably noticed that there are some extraordinary kids out there doing amazing things.

One such child recently hit the spotlight for her captivating dance performance at the Rainbow National Dance Competition; and she’s only five years old!

Talent That Stands Out

While other girls her age are playing with Barbies and watching My Little Pony, little miss Jessica Sutton has been mastering the art of dance with a maturity beyond her years. Her performance at the dance competition was full of dignity, confidence, grace, and skill. It was clear that she wasn’t only repeating moves she had learned; she was performing with a stage presence that is rare for most 5-year-olds.

Kids her age don’t generally have the balance and flexibility that is required for that amount of skill; and they certainly wouldn’t have the comprehension it takes for such a poised performance. She has reached a level that normally takes years to master. It’s clear that there is something special about Jessica.

Training

Most little girls who begin training in dance start with some combination of tap, jazz, ballet, and tumbling. The lyrical style that is performed by Jessica is often reserved for older kids because it requires more control, elegance, and emotional maturity.

If any of you have little ones in dance, you’re probably familiar with the typical fun, cute, and simple routines that they start out with as 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds. Clearly, Jessica is the exception in this case, choosing to perform a lyrical/contemporary number with an aptitude that is rare, even in kids twice her age.

What’s the Difference?

While some people believe there is no difference between lyrical and contemporary styles, they are not quite the same. Lyrical is more closely related to ballet but incorporates elements of jazz as well. It is often performed to slow, emotional pieces like Mariah Carey’s “Hero”, which was Jessica’s choice for her incredible performance.

Contemporary is a more modern adaptation of all the styles combined, often performed barefoot to much more intense or interesting music pieces.

Anticipation

There was an immediate response to Jessica’s presence on the stage. Her tiny, dolled-up, 5-year-old frame was held with perfect posture, and her eyes were full of focus. Even before she began to perform, a hush fell over the audience, as if they could sense that something spectacular was about to happen.

Her piece began with a leg tilt, a skill that immediately demonstrated coordination and flexibility that no one would expect from someone her age. She made the incredible extension look effortless, and made it clear that she was all business.

A Captivated Audience

It was obvious from the deafening silence of the crowd that they were completely awe-struck within seconds. It’s the same kind of silence that often accompanies jaws on the floor. They were mesmerized with the perfect execution of every move she performed in perfect fluidity, and with perfect timing.

Not only was she performing emotionally, but her technical performance was also flawless. Her legs were always straight, her toes always pointed, and her arms and hands were fully and gracefully extended.

With such a level of achievement at such a young age, we can only imagine where we’ll be seeing this beautiful little girl in the future. There’s a good chance she’ll be on the screen of your TV or leading the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City.

Do you know anyone who has an exceptionally talented kid? Or maybe you have one yourself. Tell us about it; we want to hear about the kids that will be leading future generations with their talents and abilities.
