"First Heavy Metal Church of Christ" Uses Rock Music To Spread The Word About Christ

When we think of churches, we usually picture hard wooden pews, stain glass windows, and familiar hymns. But this church is asking you to put that image aside as they introduce the first “heavy metal church”. Be warned: This isn’t the church that your grandmother attended!

Located in Dayton, Ohio, the First Heavy Metal Church of Christ was founded in 2011 by Senior Pastor Brian Smith and is flourishing in its unique approach to spreading the message of the gospel.

The church explains that it is set up to welcome people from all walks of life including ex-cons, drug addicts, and prostitutes. With its more laid-back approach to worship, this church helps to share the message of Christ with the use of rock music and welcomes everyone attending to simply wear their favorite rock tee-shirts. The entire goal of the church’s unusual approach is to attract those who would never feel comfortable in a traditional church setting.

Regardless of the tattoos and skull tee-shirts on many of the church leaders, they assure us that the Bible is what they lean on to gather their teachings about Christ. Pastor Brian Smith, who proudly preaches from the pulpit with a shaved head, goatee, multiple tattoos, and rock tee-shirt, explains that they reach out to everyone, regardless of their struggles. He was heard telling his congregation that, just as they don’t try to clean up before getting in the shower, God doesn’t expect them to clean up their lives before turning to him. Smith explains “God wants you exactly the way you are at this very moment”.

While Smith and the First Heavy Metal Church of Christ may be raising some eyebrows, their underlying message is solid and their efforts to help those in need admirable. We can only hope that this church will truly be able to reach out to those who other religious organizations have failed.

What do you think of this new type of church? Would you be willing to attend a service where many of the audience look like they’re part of a motorcycle gang?
