18 years after the deadly attacks on the World Trade Center in New York, the medical examiner has confirmed the identity of one firefighter who perished in the fires that day: Michael Haub.

More of his remains were recently found at Ground Zero and after being conclusively identified last week, he was buried in a ceremony on Tuesday, reports CNN. His friends and family gathered at Franklin Square, NY for the ceremony to finally mourn his loss with some closure after all of these years.

The Uniformed Firefighters Association released a statement quoted in CNN saying that Haub was a member of Ladder Company 4, and was a 13 year veteran of the fire department. Reporters attended the ceremony and spoke with a dear friend and fellow firefighter of Haub’s:

"Mike basically lived a life of service, serving people," Andrew Mulchinski said to NPR. "We all know that there was no place else that he wanted to be, regardless of whether he was going to lose his life that day or not, he wanted to be there."

Also in attendance were Michael Haub’s son Michael, daughter Kirstin, and widow Erika Starke.

CNN reports that only 60% of the 2,753 victims of the day have been identified as of July 2019. Additionally, there have been further deaths from illnesses since 2001.

“It is almost incomprehensible that after losing 343 members on September 11, we have now had 200 more FDNY members die due to World Trade Center illness,” Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said in a statement in CBS. “These heroes gave their lives bravely fighting to rescue and recover others. We will never forget them.”

Rest in peace to the hero who bravely gave his life that day—Michael Haub will never be forgotten. Pass this article on to others to carry on his memory.
