The British royal family is often in the press, but there's no denying that some members are more prominent than others. Naturally, Queen Elizabeth II was written about frequently, as well as other senior members like King Charles III, Prince William, Prince Harry, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle. Unfortunately, Queen Elizabeth II passed away on Sept. 8. 2022 while at her home at Balmoral Castle.
The late queen's other children, such as Princess Anne and Prince Andrew are also written about from time to time, but probably the least written about is Prince Edward, the youngest of Elizabeth's children with the late Prince Philip.
He was born on March 10, 1964, to Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. Edward's birth was the first of the queen's children at which Philip was present. As the youngest child of the queen, he followed his two older brothers in the line of succession. Upon birth, Edward was third in the line of succession, however, since his siblings have had children of their own and even grandchildren, he is now 13th in line.
Edward married Sophie Rhys-Jones, now known as Sophie, Countess of Wessex in 1999. The two have been married for over 20 years and Edward is actually the only child of the late queen and Prince Philip that hasn't gotten divorced. Together, the couple has two children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn.
During the Sep. 17, 2022 vigil for Queen Elizabeth, 18-year-old Louise paid a sweet, subtle tribute to her grandmother, commemorating their strong bond as well as their shared love of horses.
Louise's mother, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, was born in Oxford, England on Jan. 20, 1965. After she trained as a secretary, she began working in public relations before she eventually started her own agency named RJH Public Relations in 1996.
As a present from Queen Elizabeth II for their wedding, Sophie's husband, Edward, was given the title Earl of Wessex, which made her the Countess of Wessex. Edward also received the title Earl of Forfar as a birthday gift from his mother, the late queen on March 10, 2018.
The family often attends royal family events but has historically stayed under the radar. However, that all changed in 2017 when Edward began to take over some of his father's duties. Prince Philip's age had made him increasingly unable to carry out some of his responsibilities, which led to Edward's decision to step up. Besides the couple's royal duties, Edward and Sophie are also notably philanthropic.
Lady Louise Alice Elizabeth Mary Mountbatten-Windsor, the couple's first child, was born on Nov. 8, 2003. According to the BBC, Lady Louise was born prematurely and therefore had complications and an eye condition that was later corrected in her teenage years.
Since Edward and Sophie choose to live a relatively quiet life, it's no surprise that the lives of their children are even less public. However, as a young girl, Louise played a role in the biggest royal wedding of the century — she was a bridesmaid at the tender age of 7 for her cousin William, Prince of Wales' wedding to Catherine, Princess of Wales.

Since 2015, Louise has accompanied her parents on a number of official engagements, including a trip to South Africa. The family also attended the funeral of Prince Philip together, as well as his memorial service in 2022. Later on, in June 2022, Louise also attended various events celebrating the queen's Platinum Jubilee, and appeared on the balcony alongside other royals for Trooping the Colour.
Personally, Louise's interests include Girlguiding and horses. Specifically, she enjoys carriage driving, a sport popularized by her grandfather. In 2017, she made her debut leading the carriages of the Champagne Laurent-Perrier Meet of the British Driving Society at the Royal Windsor Horse Show. In 2019, she also competed in the Private Driving Singles carriage drive at the Royal Windsor Horse Show.
Queen Elizabeth was also well-known for her love of horses. The queen received her first Shetland pony when she was only 4 years old. During her committal service, her pony Carltonlima Emma stood on the grounds of Windsor Castle, allowing her to watch Elizabeth's coffin process to St. George's Chapel.
To pay homage to her late grandmother, Louise wore a silver necklace with a horse pendant for the occasion. While other members of the royal family opted for the more traditional pearl, the young royal chose a more personal symbol, nodding to her and her grandmother's equestrian hearts. She had similarly worn a brooch featuring a horse's head and a whip to Prince Philip's funeral in 2021, symbolizing their love of carriage driving.
Her subtle, but poignant nods towards her grandparents during these difficult times show immense love and strength from the young royal.
