On Feb. 5, 2024, the country music world was thrown into mourning after one of its all-time greats, Toby Keith, passed away after a years-long tough battle against cancer. Grief poured out from across the industry and all walks of life, a testament to the profound impact the legendary singer and songwriter had on loved ones, those around him and anyone who had ever been touched by his words and music across his lengthy career.

His battle with the disease was marked by grace and courage, and his family requested privacy during this difficult time. He left behind his wife of 39 years, Tricia Lucus, and their three children.

In honor of Toby’s legacy, heavyweights of the country music scene got together for a televised tribute concert called “Toby Keith: American Icon” that aired on NBC on Aug. 28, 2024. Among the performers at the Nashville event were Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood and Jelly Roll.

A special guest who was also set to take the stage was Toby’s own daughter, Krystal Keith. The 38-year-old Krystal had followed in her father’s footsteps to become a country music singer in her own right. Before her father’s tribute concert, Krystal admitted she felt some hesitation about performing. She told People:

“I was thinking, ‘OK, I can make it through a party song.’ But when (producers) approached me with (‘Don’t Let The Old Man In’), I was like, ‘Well crap, I already cry with that song, just listening to it. I don’t know how I’m going to sing it.’”

She added, “I’m glad they did, though, because it turned out really special. I think that he would’ve been proud of it.”

Written by Toby, the song deals with themes about getting older and was last the star ever performed live in September 2023.

Dressed in a floor-length black dress embellished with sparkling details, Krystal Keith took to the stage to perform “Don’t Let the Old Man In” with a live band. Donning a wide-brimmed black felt hat, Krystal’s heart-stirring performance left a deep impression on the live audience and viewers, who couldn’t help but notice the emotions expressed clearly on her face as she belted out the moving song. Many also couldn’t help but notice the similarities between her and her late father.

“Take after dad please sing for him... love you…” one viewer commented, while another said, “I can hear our toby’s voice singing this song!😢😢💔”

“Beautiful song she's just like her dad lovely voice,” a third viewer said.

For others, the performance left them devastated.

“Wow this is going to make me cry,” one user wrote, as another remarked, “So beautiful, I’m crying. Such an amazing voice. ❤️.”

“Beautiful! You look stunning and so proud to wear your father’s hat! Toby was one hellava man,” another moved fan commented.

Krystal’s moving performance was further enhanced by a montage of family photos playing on the screen behind her.

“There wasn’t a dry eye in the room when Toby’s daughter @KrystalKeith gave this beautiful performance of ‘Don’t Let The Old Man In’ during the ‘Toby Keith: American Icon’ concert,” read one of NBC’s promos for the tribute concert.

Proceeds from the concert went to several charities that Toby supported, including his own Toby Keith Foundation. His giving nature was something Krystal elaborated on in a tribute post to him a few days after his passing. The post read:

“There is so much he did for people that no one knew about, even us. He didn’t want recognition for doing good deeds, he just did them because his heart led him to or someone needed him to.”
