Experts Are Warning To Stay Away From Energy Saving Light Bulbs Due To Health Concerns

When energy saving light bulbs came on the market, everyone went crazy for them. They became very popular, very quickly. People learned that they could not only help the environment, but they could also save money on their energy bill. Who wouldn't want to make the switch to energy efficient light bulbs? They are now popular all around the world.
However, not everyone is completely on board with this new change.
Some scientists believe when the energy saving light bulbs are turned on, they emit carcinogenic chemicals that could be potentially harmful to our health. This news could be very worrisome to the many people who have already made the switch.
Researchers in Germany conducted studies on these bulbs and found they emit different toxins such as styrene, phenol and naphthalene. Due to these findings, people should not have these lights on close to their head.

In addition, countries that have created these energy saving bulbs don't have very strict environmental laws. There is no way of knowing what kind of chemicals and materials could have come into contact during the creation process. The production process alone could be causing damage to our environment.
istockphotos.com/tzahiVA professor of biology in Israel at Haifa University, Abraham Haim, stated there is a link between breast cancer and light exposure at night. However, he said it was much worse when energy saving light bulbs were used. The light exposure from the bulbs are known to disrupt the body's melatonin levels. Melatonin is a hormone that helps us sleep at night. Haim stated more research still needs to be done.
Other people disagree with the theory. A study by Stone Brook University in New York found that the damage done wasn't any more than 20 minutes out in the sun. It is not significant enough to be worried.
Many people claim that if we simply keep an eye on our health, which we should anyway, we should be fine!
istockphotos.com/Volodymyr_PlysiukThere is not enough research to prove one theory over another. We still don't know all of the answers. Energy saving light bulbs might be dangerous to our health or they may have very little effect on us. Studies are still being conducted.
