The iconic Bruce Willis doesn’t need much introduction. He is one of Hollywood’s biggest names, famous for his memorable roles in action films. He rose to fame by portraying the sharp-witted detective John McClane in the “Die Hard” series.
Throughout his four-decades-long career, Bruce displayed remarkable versatility, taking on roles in everything from drama and thrillers to comedy and science fiction. His tough-guy persona, charm, and humor have made him a beloved figure in Hollywood.
Unfortunately, in February 2023, the Willis family released a statement revealing that the beloved actor had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), following his retirement from the big screen in March 2022 due to aphasia.
In brief, FTD is a progressive neurological disorder that impacts the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain, leading to changes in personality, behavior, and language.
Before starting a family with his current wife, British model and actress Emma Heming Willis, Bruce was married to Demi Moore from 1987 to 2000, and they share three daughters: Rumer Willis, 36, Scout Willis, 33, and Tallulah Willis, 30.
In September 2023, Moore spoke about her ex-husband’s condition while appearing on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” stating that “given the givens, he is in a stable place.”
She also discussed how she supported their three daughters in coping with the heartbreaking diagnosis, sharing: “What I say to my kids is, ‘You meet him where he’s at. You don’t hold on to who he was or what you want him to be, but who he is in this moment.”
She added: “And from that, there is such beauty and joy and loving and sweetness. When I’m in LA, I go over every week, and I really treasure the time that we all share.”
On Dec. 29, 2024, Bruce’s wife, Emma, marked their 17th anniversary by sharing a heartfelt post on Instagram.
The 46-year-old, who married Bruce in March 2009, posted a throwback photo of the couple standing thigh-deep in the ocean at sunset. She captioned the post: “17 years of us ❤️.”
Emma reflected on the emotional toll of the occasion, writing: “Anniversaries used to bring excitement — now, if I’m honest, they stir up all the feelings, leaving a heaviness in my heart and a pit in my stomach.”
She shared how she processes her emotions, saying:
“I give myself 30 minutes to sit in the ‘why him, why us,’ to feel the anger and grief. Then I shake it off and return to what is. And what is… is unconditional love. I feel blessed to know it, and it’s because of him. I’d do it all over again and again in a heartbeat.”
Earlier in 2024, Emma explained to Town & Country magazine why she has never hidden Bruce’s diagnosis from their children, Mabel Willis, 12, and Evelyn Willis, 10.
She said:
“I’ve never tried to sugarcoat anything for them. They’ve grown up with Bruce declining over the years. I’m not trying to shield them from it.”
She also emphasized the importance of transparency:
“If children ask questions, they’re ready to know the answer.”
While the family is open about Bruce’s illness, Heming noted, “I don’t like to speak about the terminal side of this with them, nor have they asked,” but the girls understand that “Daddy’s not going to get better.”
